View Full Version : Removing Rear Vision Mirror

Hey guys,
I need to remove the rear vision mirror to fit a new one. It sort of looks like the old one is clipped onto a mount on the windscreen, is this correct or do I just pull the whole thing off?
If the whole thing comes off, I might go to a windscreen place so they can fit the new one with the glue that they use.
Cheers,
Ben

If you have the replacement already, you see how the spring clip works... If you just pull it off, you will be seeing the auto glazier.

Nah I will be picking up the new one from Mitsubishi tomorrow around lunchtime, but was looking at it today trying to work out how to get it off. I'll take a look at the new one and work it out, thanks mate.

Grab the mirror by the mounting stalk and push it towards the glass and slide it down towards the dash.

That might actually be wrong. Picked up the mirror today, when I got in the car I took it out of the box and it had a different bracket on it, so I went back and asked, turns out there is 3 different types, so they are getting the right one for my car and I should have it tomorrow.

Ahh the instructions I posted should suit a te to th. I think tj on they were attached to a bracket behind the headliner (someone with a tj chime in here to clarify!)

Nope!
TJ and TL have a metal plate glued to the windscreen, this stays on if you want your windscreen to stay in one piece!
Enter the mount on the mirror from underneath with a flat bladed screwdriver, need to press in a clip a couple of mm, then the mirror slides UP.
Took one off the original screen by wrenching it - screen was destroyed already. I break off the clip on the back of the mirror so that it can slide up and off without dramas. Planning to buy a new one at some stage, got two but they are both peeling internally.
Quick setup for swapping mirrors without that clip, doesn't come adrift by itself.
Can't comment on any other designs Mitsu may have used.

You are exactly right, it does slide up when you use a screwdriver to un-clip it. Don't really want a new windscreen lol. That's why I thought I would ask before I start forcing things haha.

You got violent with it, didn't you? You were warned.

Maybe... Haha. Nah I could get the clip to release, even levering it with a screwdriver, I ended up pulling it up, and literally took a chunk of the first layer of the windscreen.
Not having much luck at all with windscreens today, I decided to take my Holden Colorado out for a run (still pretty new), anyway, literally got 2kms from home, next thing I see another 4x4 flying up the road with a trailer, so I pulled over almost stopped, next thing a rock flys up and hit the windscreen and puts a chip the size of a tennis ball right where I have to look through the windscreen, dammit.
Anyway, ended up pulling over and calling the RACV and they organised it straight away and now it's got a brand new windscreen and it was covered by insurance :D

Two screens in one day!
With the magna, try superglue, might hold the mirror back on if the lump pulled off the screen is still attached to the mirror mount.

Yeah not good! haha.
The lump of windscreen is still attached to the mirror mount, I might give it a try, but the now that the car has bass, it might vibrate it off eventually lol.

I have been monitoring this thread for hints/tricks and nuggets if wisdom for removing the rear view mirror. I plan on swapping mirrors this weekend.
Have tried a screwdriver in there with no luck also. But, I've been looking at photos of the mirror attachment, and now I have a spare mirror to compare I don't think a screwdriver will help. Looks like what's needed is a screwdriver with a curve in it, so it can be pushed up to where the spring clip meets the metal boss on the windscreen. Then when levered you're acting on the front end of the clip, not the rear which seems to push this clip in the wrong direction.
I might modify a screwdriver to do the job I think.

Okay, so this was eating away at me so I thought I'd have a crack tonight. Spare mirror in hand I had at my windscreen with screwdrivers and swear words.
I tried four different screwdrivers in as many positions as I could one handed. All failed. Just not enough leverage and it was pretty nervous going. And slightly unpleasant with the gear stick in my back; having one hand wouldn't be so bad if you could swap left to right as needed.
What did work in the end was a pair of needle nosed vice grips.
A COUPLE OF POINTS;
If you need to reuse your mirror, tape the pliers so you don't damage the mirror.
If you've got more than one hand you might want to try other options first.

Now you know why I break that clip off the mirror mount. lol Fits tight enough without it, and is easy to remove whrn I clean the glass.

If you're removing your old mirror you might as well buy a chromatic mirror. It's a pretty easy install and you can always add a chromatic drivers side mirror too like I plan on doing

That is exactly what my intrepid wife did - bent a straight tip screwdriver and got in there upside down and levered the old one out; all with absolutely not a mark on the windscreen. She's pretty good at embarrassing a chap - patience wise at times! :kb:

Couple of problems with the retaining clip, I found:
(a) The clip has 2 dimples on it that retain it on the mount once pushed on. Makes it difficult to take off.
(b) The clip is held onto the mirror itself by two points that look like rivet heads.
(c) The clip provides spring pressure to keep the mirror tight on the mount.
Rather than breaking off half of the clip altogether, it might be best to grind or file the two retaining dimples right off.
I found that if the mirror comes loose on the rivet heads you get vibration and blurring in the mirror at idle, but some superglue fixed that.
Once the two mirrors I have get really bad (peeling internally), I plan to buy a new one, grind the dimples off and superglue the clip to mirror mounting points as a precaution. No vibration, easy to remove the mirror for cleaning mirror and glass behind it.

if u don't need the old mirror tape up around the base with masking tape and put newspaper down and use a hacksaw to cut across the base. its pretty soft metal and take 2 mins to get it off without damaging the windscreen.
just don't try and force it with a screwdriver as it will crack the glass and then u need a new winscreen!

Not so much as crack it, you just pull out a lump of glass from the inner surface.
I guess it is a safety feature, if you smash headfirst into it during a crash. Breakaway interior mirror, that sort of thing.
Once it is off though, you can modify it (or a new one) to avoid the stress when taking it off. See my previous post.

if u pul a lump out its new winscreen time as the structual intigrety is compromised. in a rollover the first time a car goes on the roof it crcks the glass but the roof stays up. one the 2nd roll the roof caves in as the bracing of the windscreen is gone.
