Hi Guys, Just I quick question I just wanted to know if using Night-Shades from Supercheapauto is illegal? Please don't just write one-worded 'yes' just tell if any of you have used and the cops haven't stopped you, Thanks :D

Call the RTA (now RMS) technical inquiries and ask them. (Also, what is a night shade?)

Night shade is a tinting spray to tint your tail lights or the likes. IMHO they look tacky and from memory they are illegal. But most cops don't bother too much about them, UNLESS they can't see the reflector.

this would be the best advice to follow. contact your state transport authority and find out from them if there are restrictions on how dark any tinting of lights can be (or whether they can be tinted at all). basing your decision on anecdotal evidence can be a bad move if it means a yellow sticker on your car.

You'll get done for tinted tails, usually if the copper involved is interested in finding things wrong with your car.

A member got done recently for having tl vrx tails, which are factory tinted. But i suspect the boys in blue, and the car owner, weren't having the best of polite conversation.

I'd be more concerned about the insurance kind of thing, if i made the mistake of accidentally running into your rear end, and you had illegally tinted lights, it might cross my mind to say I couldn't see your signals.

Mind you, I saw an English cop show last night, they pulled over a guy who had black stockings over his taillights. Must have taken his lights off, put one in each leg, and refitted. I lol..

Yeah, thanks guys for the quick replies, I guess I'll just not use the night-shade and just move onto other mods on my car :D Thanks

Don't know what the attraction of night shade is. The tail lights are there to be seen, why darken them? If someone runs up your tail pipe, and says that they didn't see your brake lights, and it turns out you have darkened them, you may be in strife.

When I see a car with faint lights, I wonder if they have a flat battery and failing alternator. lol Hardly a good mod.

Illegal defectable and insurance cancelling if they see or the other person running into you mentions something like they couldn't see your lights then it will cost you. Ridiculous mod any how and looks horrible and tacky IMO. The back of the night shades can will also tell you it isnt for road use and is to be used on show car or off road cars only

One of the dumbest things I ever heard of. Should get the award for best "I'm a dumbass" mod ever.

I put a light coat on my tail lights. All the light goes through it fine, it just takes a bit of the glare off.

Well this beats that, a HZ ute in the factory next door to my factory with chev badges, funny part is when they went to start the car it would not go so had to of course advise them that the Chev badges were the issue and if they put the holden badges back on then it will go :)

Back to topic however, is a stupid thing to do, lights are there to show other drivers you are stopping or turning and on my car I want these suckers as bright as I can get them and have as many of them as I can

I wonder if high intensity, stobe type brake lights are legal? I always wanted ones that varied the flash rate proportional to how hard you press on the brake pedal.

They are available now on all manner of road cars but you wouldnt be able to retrofit them to a magna legally.

OP, source genuine TL onwards VRX tail lights as they are slightly darker than other models. I had them on my old TJ and looked great

They only have the none-optic bits darkened and not the main area where light transmission occurs.

For the record VRX tails aren't tinted at all. The outer housing is absolutely identical to the standard TL lights. The only difference is the internal surrounds, which are painted in a gloss black as appose to chrome.

Yep. I can vouch for that.
