Hi there, I have an issue with my TL magna, as of the last couple of weeks, when it is dark and you put your lights on, the speedo, tacho as well as other gauges in the instrument cluster and the P, R, N & D next to the gear selector do not light up, and if not for the slight glow of the screen which shows the amount of kms travelled in total, it would be very difficult to maintain the right speed. Does anyone know of the reason for this, I initially thought that it may be a fuse, but thought I would come on here to seek further input.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the club. Have you adjusted the dimmer on the bottom right of the dash?

yeah bud, that yields no difference, it remains a complete blackout except for the odo reading

Perhaps a faulty connection to the cluster? bulbs?

As far as fuses go:
In the engine bay:
No. 11 15A red fuse - Traction control, engine control, A/T, A/C, centre display, ABS, SRS, C/C, combination meter, BEM, room illumination etc.
In the cabin in the drivers footwell:
No. 6 10A red fuse - Audio system, C/C, centre display, combination meter, power atenna

There is no dedicated fuse for the dash cluster. As Dreggzy said, may be a faulty connector. AFAIK the TL dash uses LEDs. The dimmer switch may have become faulty and stuck in the lowest setting.

So you dont think that the changing of either of those fuses will have any effect, there isnt one dedicated to that part specifically, but would there be any impact from the 2 fuses mentioned?

How would one replace or test the dimmer wheel? although when the ignition is off and only the headlights left on, the cluster is completely dark, no lights at all. Even in the dimmers lowest position i would have thought there would be a minimal amount of light.

I thought the TL magna was the same as TJ, the instrument cluster lights came on only when the ignition was on, and turning the headlights on doesn't effect this? (I could be wrong) but if it is the same as a TJ, then yeah, faulty dimmer switch, (just get a surround from the wreckers and try it) or faulty cluster (some wreckers will actually let you try a cluster before you buy)

isn't these clusters some sort of HD cluster or something to that effect?

I think i recall even a couple of weeks back that they did light up even once the ignition was switched off... its funny how you dont notice things that you see all the time, not 100% sure on that they stay on, but i think they do.

What do you mean by HD cluster and does anyone know of a site or a general description as to how to remove the bit with the dimmer wheel on it, i pulled apart mine, a hyundai and it was just the clips holding it in, so essentially you just pulled it off, is it the same?

Thanks
