Hello all,

Have just brought a TH Magna from a salvage auction that comes with no keys, just wondering if anyone knows the easiest way to break the steering lock so I can move the car into my shed (ie turn the wheel, I had thought of a jack to reposition but will be on dirt) once it comes off the truck. Or will I need to disassemble the steering column etc completely?

I only hope to strip some parts of this car and use it as an offroad only project. Not planning on ever making it road worthy or using the key to start the engine, will have it rewired to a button start later.

Cheers

Unhook the steering column from the steering rack in the engine compartment, straighten out the wheels - might need taking the weight off the wheels first with a jack under the subframe - then push into shed.

can you simply not pull the ignition lock out and move it freely that way

Yep. You can simply snap off the whole ignition column. A really big shifter spanner usually works. It's how I got my old wreck moving. You do irreperable damage though.

use a pin punch to tap the tamper proof screws undone ( by tapping them anti clockwise) in the ignition switch holding bracket then you can remove the lock and the steering will turn.

Well just an update for anyone who finds the thread.

I could have used a "stud/screw/bolt extractor", which I was trying to do until the town I am living in the local hardware shop didn't have any. So... I tried drilling them out (the three bolts) and getting them loose, but that still didnt work.

So I removed the steering column from the car, an used an angle grinder to cut and then grind the nuts/bolts flush to surface to allow the bolts to drop out and the ignition side drop off.. now it is fully turning!
