Hi all! Just bought my first Magna a few weeks ago and I gotta admit I love it... :woot: Although coming from a tiny Series 3 RX7 to this is like stepping into a Rolls Royce haha.

Details; 2002 LE V6. Full leather cream interior, midnight blue paint, 85000ks. Was owned by an elderly gent from new who was sick for several months then sadly passed recently. Picked it up from the grandchildren for a smidge under $5k. Happy with the purchase, sad about the circumstances...

Its stocker than stock so have already installed a new head unit for the tunes, will look at the rest of the system later. Took it for a service and unfortunately there's a heap of things need doing, mainly due to it not being used for a while.

Good news is though it needs new tyres and a catback exhaust :facejump:

Anyone installed Mitsubishi 380 wheels onto an earlier model Magna? Not too keen on buying a set off brand new mags and tyres right now and these look pretty cool and understated. Not sure which version I'm after, there looks like there's quite a few.

The exhaust... Read through the forum and Youtubed a few brands on Magnas and the Redback catback system looks good value and sounds awesome. The rest sound a little tinny? Particularly the Lukey set up but could just be that car... I'm after relative quiet at low revs but when I give it some foot it growls like a wounded lion. Any ideas? And more importantly price installed? I'm quoted $650 for the stock standard installed which I laughed at. Literally.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks all!!!!! :bowrofl:

Welcome :)

Yes, quite a few members, including myself, have fitted wheels off other models, including Lancers, Outlanders and 380s. You will need to, however, consider the size of your tires as the ones fitted may not be a legal fitment on a Magna, in terms of both load rating, and size.

Yes, 380 wheels go straight onto a Magna, they're the same size/width/offset as the 17" Magna mags.

The Lukey LR2779 straight-through rear muffler would be my pick IMO. Not much to gain by replacing the rest of the system.

Don't forget that at 85,000km and 11 years of age you're probably due for the major service asap.

Does the whole exhaust cat-back need replacing? They're already a good flowing system, like Red said, the rear muffler is really the only required change. Even the standard "sports" exhaust has a nice note to it

I kind of like that "it growls like a wounded lion" sound it makes. lol

Been complimented by onlookers who say "that sounds nice" as well. Listen to some other 2002 Magnas as they take off, sounds quite good.

Thanks for the replies fellas!

Good to know the 380 rims will fit! I've already budgeted to buy new tyres when I finally find some rims I like, so I'll leave the sizing up to the professionals.

I'll do a bit more looking around re Lukey's then... And yeah, I'm told the cat converter has a hole in it and the muffler is rusting out. Probably due to moisture on the inside and sitting around for a while in a garage. If they both need to be replaced I just assume I may as well do the whole thing. Defo not an expert there though. To be honest it sounds alright as it is now with the hole/s haha

I got a minor service, which led to a raft of other things needing doing. The most potentially alarming is an oil leak around the rear rocker cover gasket and front crank seal area (word for word). But that could be down to being idle as well. And the tranny has dirty fluid so needs a full flush (@ $350 which sounds a bit rich!).

Taking it somewhere else for a second opinion and quote...

$350 is a tad much. You can get it done for $250 at some places (NSW prices).

If your cat converter is dead, get a higher flowing one. A bit louder, but hey so is a sports exhaust. They are also generally cheaper.

Hey johnhogg, correct me if I am wrong, but the redback cat back system (or any other brand for that matter), does not include the cat. Better off getting a stainless steel cat (off ebay) and one of the berklee mufflers that kj380 is selling, assuming the pipes are still ok.

I got the feeling from the place I went that they aren't too bothered about return business so charged a premium, they're on a main road near me, massive signage and came across a tad arrogant so probably get enough business to get ahead. Not a great business model but what do I know...

Magnas with 17" rims standard run 225/50/17 tyres.

380 rims are 215/55/17 but may not be load rated properly? I think they're the correct diameter though.

Johnhogg, you have a non-sports magna so requires at least 95 load rating and need 225/50/17 tyres with the XL badging (extra load). You could also go 225/55R17.

I have got no doubt you're right. All my knowledge is acquired thru reading with no actual experience! Never had exhaust probs with any previous cars. I was wondering myself what I was going to do with the cat! I want to take it to a proper exhaust shop, get more some ideas from them and go from there... Finding out who they are the distributor for first ;)

OP would need to check his tyre placard. I don't have a sports model Magna (TJ Advance) and mine has a 94 load rating.

Better off sourcing the cat and muffler yourself and then take it to an exhaust place to get them fitted. As mentioned, plenty of good stainless steel cats on ebay and other places and then just get the Berklee BS0655 muffler from treeadeyman (formerlly known as kj380) here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99802).

Hmm, others can correct me but that may have been changed. Pretty sure the only magnas with 94 load rating are the ralliart, FWD sports, FWD vrx magnas and the FWD GTV/i veradas.

My car only runs 215/55R16?
Does that mean my tyres are illegal? :S

not necessarily. yours is a sports so has min of 94. depends on your tyres rating.

No, XL tyres are unsuitable for any Magna. You are in for an extremely firm ride as you need to inflate them above 40psi to get the same load rating as a Non-XL tyre

your statement does not make sense. xl tyres are designed to carry extra load. i have had them and did not need to run at 40 psi. i ran at 36.

I dont get why they have an xl tyre. woulsnt it just be 95 instead of 94?? that is extra load, why does it need some atupid xl symbol that doesbt fit in with the system?. the world is frustrating.

Correct, it is to stop the tyres flat-spotting by being able to run them at higher PSI, they have a stronger carcass.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_code

"XL: eXtra Load; a tire that allows a higher inflation pressure than a Standard Load tire, which increases the tire's maximum load"

From our very own Bob Jane - http://www.bobjane.com.au/info/extra-load-tyres

This is an example of the pressures required to obtain the correct load rating in an XL tyre - http://www.barrystiretech.com/2005traloadtable.jpg

edit: This webpage actually explains the whole thing in great detail, and shows that the relationship between load and pressure is a curve - http://www.barrystiretech.com/loadtables.html

XL tyres are designed for specific models, where the design of the car only allows the fitment of an XL tyre. For example, some Mazda 3's require XL tyres due to the design of track, suspension geometry etc. See the link above for an explanation.

Woo hoo, worked haha...

First thing purchased was black Altezza tail lights, just waiting for delivery. Will strap them on and load a pic.

Looking for rims from a 2007-08 380 VR-X now, not much about though.
