View Full Version : Broken tensioner?

Hey all,
After changing the head on my TR 2.6 4cyl I couldn't for the life of me get the camshaft sprocket to sit back on the shaft. It literally refuses to be reconnected to the head. The chain itself is much too tight to allow the sprocket to travel up high enough to line up with the little dowel. I know WHY it's like that, it's because the little rubber tensioner is fully extended.
I've pushed and pulled the lever you find halfway down the chain all to no avail, it's like the actual tensioner is busted. We've tried crowbars, screwdrivers, the whole works. Nothing can get that stupid piece of rubber to release.
Is there any tricks or tips you guys know of to get the bastard off the chain? preferably without literally angle-grinding it off :/
Cheers, Rob

That piece of rubber sits on a metal shaft in a hole in the oil pump. It is spring loaded. If it pops right out, which it will if you let the chain slack off at any time, it will not go in by itself. Need to drop the timing case and sump and get it back in there.
Block has a little ledge for the cam sprocket and chain to sit on. Plunger won't pop out if you use that. No lever on the TR oil pump that needs releasing.

Plunger will not pop right out as there is a grub screw to prevent it. Unless the grub screw is worn away.
Even by dropping the cog that small amount onto the holder it (ratchet adjuster) will still take up that small amount of slack and you have to move the ratchet release lever to get the cog back up that little distance as you need a little slack in the chain.Pain in the butt is possible though.
I f you can get a thin flat piece of steel and bend a small 90 degree bend in it and slide between the chain and rubber adjuster and try wriggling the adjuster up and down once the ratchet is released and try to slide it back in as that is what i had to do in the past. Two sets of hands is good.
One set pull up on the cog and chain>>> also let the cog down and up tugging on it will help instead of constant tension.
Failing that pull the sump off and do it from underneath. Failing that you will have to remove the timing cover.
No lever on the TR oil pump that needs releasing.Might need to look closer at that as late TP had the ratchet tensioner modification installed (see supplement at rear of workshop manual)unless you had a motor from an earlier Magna put in it at some time in its earlier life.

I'll have another play in the morning, see if I can wriggle it back in.
Sounds like it might be time to take the sump off sadly :/

im guessing you have the timing cover off
( I've pushed and pulled the lever you find halfway down the chain all to no avail,) quote
when you push the lever check if the pin is moving.
