Hi again
Picked up my 2002 TJ Advance today. Very happy with its performance so far, which has consisted of driving aimlessly on freeways and in the burbs, listening like a hawk for any weird noises. So far, so good.
However, turns out there is only one key and one central locking remote for the car! And the remote died. Anyway, I'm likely to lose them so where's the cheapest place for replacements and programming please? Any help appreciated.
Cheers

I bought a new remote of ebay for $50, that was very cheap as most on ebay are second hand and about the same price, programming is easy you just get in your car turn the key 3 times to the on position but not as far as start and on the third time leave it on the "on" position and push one of the buttons on the remote, if it has worked the blinkers will flash. cheers

That is fine for the remote but will not work for a key
The key some locksmiths will clone your existing key, not sure on the cost. I can do a new key including programming for $135

Cheers Madmagna - does that price include a new key cloned and remote programming?
$135 would be key only, not remote. And that is cheap.

$135 is for a new key and programming to your car. Remotes I dont sell as they are not worth the hassle with used ones and there really is nothing in it for us with new remotes.

Yep, bought a remote for $75 on eBay, and there's a place around the corner from my work who'll copy and code the key for $125.

Could you please tell me where the guy is to copy & code the key? I need a copy for my new Pajero, and if I can get an identical clone, the ECU should not need reprogramming.

Worth checking there are two keys and at least one working remote when you buy any used car. Or ask for a discount of $200 on the asking price to motivate the owner to go hunt for it. lol

This seller on eBay offers cloning with key provided for $95 for TE and TF only but you have to send him a working key first. He sells blank keys for all models for $25 posted. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mitsubishi-Magna-Verada-Transponder-Key-/200914683500?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec772c66c&_uhb=1#ht_500wt_1156

True, but when trying to keep in mind all the others things to check out when buying a car, I didnt think to ask "Will there be more than one key for me to lose?" But if this is the worst thing I discover about this car, then I'm still happy with it.

No good for my model unfortunately, and if I sent him my key, I'd be back on PT...

For anyone interested - the remote from eBay worked a treat. Doors closed and windows up, just three turns of the ignition (not to turn the engine over) and the hazards should flash and then you just press a button on the remote and presto - no more opening the car door with the key like a loser.

Got a new key myself today in Naracoorte SA from the dealer. $70 for the blank, $12 to cut it, 10mins to code it. Asked how much I owed them... Looked sideways at his colleague, asked if I brought the key from them, said I haven't done a job sheet yet. Took the hint, said thanks very much and promptly left before he changed his mind! Total cost for new key, $82!! Yus!

Hey Deano - the $50 Ebay guy does not seem to be there now; don't suppose you remember his Seller name?

For those in the newcastle nsw area, i just got a key done for $99 at belmont locksmith across from the coles city centre. He didnt even need to plug in a computer, he said theres only like 3 different codes, tried 1 failed went back in the shop did his thing, tried another, bingo. It took all of about 15mins to cut and code, job done. Bargain i would say.

I'm keen to get a spare key cut, dont need a remote. Does anyone know what's involved in programming the key on a TH (wondering if its possible to DIY). Also, does anybody know a place in Perth that cuts & programs mits keys at a good price? $160 odd from mits seems a bit steep.

a bit of a thread revival, does anyone know the cheapest place to get a new key cut or a key cloned for a TJ magna in adelaide? portside mitsubishi said i should contact alchin locksmiths, but they are mobile service only apparently (not that convenient), and agostino mitsubishi wanted nearly $200 or something crazy.
I know it is not Adelaide, but there is a guy in the Dandenong Market (Melbourne area) who cuts and codes keys. He did one for my Pajero. From memory it cost $65. Great bloke - he did the job a lot cheaper than anyone else I could find. No connection with him other than being a very satisfied customer.

For the remote (transmitter), I have just been quoted $90.36 + GST from my local Mitsubishi dealer (Parramatta Motor Group).
On ebay, (Wilsons) Albion Park Mitsubishi are selling them new for $74.95 + $2 postage. Sounds like a good deal.

Looking at my key, I cant see why (or how) it would need to be coded. The Commie keys, sure - tha'ts got the remote and the immobilizer in it.
When I picked up my KH Verada (2000 build) It came with the black and the grey key, as well as a non-functional remote.
From my previous experience breaking remotes trying to change batteries I just gave up on the idea of remote central - till I read this thread.
Since the Missus and I share the car (but not out keys) I was thinking of getting a second black key cut.
Can someone explain to my how there is a code in the key?

There is a transponder in the key that sends out the "code".
Around the ignition there is a ring which talks to this transponder to get confirmation.

Ahh, okay - so basically the same as the Commodore, but without the contacts.
I'm assuming it uses induction to power the key?

that black bit on the top is where the chip is.if you put another non-coded key in it will wipe all keys off the system and the car wont start at all.
a new key blank is 80.00 from mitsu, and coding is 80.00 usually(can vary from dealer)

Got quoted $90 from the key place in the shopping centre. When he saw my face, he explained that there is a transponder in there and he needed to code the key.
I'll be going back there with the cash very soon :D

Cheers This reply is a bit late but try this repair. Obtain a new 2032 button cell battery , older calculators used them, pop open the broken remote, check battery holder soldered contacts, they are poorly soldered, carefully resolder using printed cct. techniques, static prevention etc. Reprogramme in vehicle as described in previous thread # 18, should be good second remote.

There's also another problem they have besides the usual broken solder joint, the silicone buttons sweat and go gooey. That goo is then forced into the micro switches and sticks. Sometimes metho or electronics cleaner can free it up again but I just fixed both of mine again. This time the open on the mrs was stuffed, opened it up and the contact was corroded, out of shape and under that where the contact is was full of green goo.
I cleaned it out and then swapped the inside contact from the panic button which is never used to refurb the green button. I have seen someone selling replacement micro switches on ebay if you're into this sort of fiddling.
