Hi all,

I am wanting to separate my tail light and headlight from their backings. I know the glue for the tail light is not butyl... Its a very stuff clear glue. Resembles super glue or araldite... I tried the oven and lets just say it didnt really come out the way I wanted it.

I used an oven to take apart a set of parabolic headlights and wasn't a fan. Probably because I ended up melting one slightly.

I would recommend using a heatgun instead. Seperate with a paint scraper.

Pour hot water in the tail light. Should come apart easy enough.

Try a Hair Dryer but keep a close eye on it.

Nothing looks worse than headlights or tail lights that look like they were parked too close to a fire. lol

Why are you trying to open them up, anyway?

I may try the heatgun...
Dreggzy, has this actually worked for you?! I never would have guessed :|
I know how tail lights that were in an oven too long look and dont want to spend another 36$ if I can avoid it :P
Specially afraid when pulling apart my one piece parabolics!
I want to install some custom DRLs for the front and leds for the rear.

Yeah on my sedan tail light.

Poured boiling water from a kettle straight into it, left it for 5 minutes, then poured all the water out (with a towel wrapped around my hands) and the tail light came apart no dramas. No damage or anything. The glue just seperated.

It sounded too good to be true, but nevertheless... it was true! It needed a bit of force, but it came apart very nicely. Pleased :D Thanks heaps!
Did you use araldite to put it back together? Or do you think silicone would suit?

I will definitely have to give this a go for my headlight. Seems so much safer!

I'll be doing this soon to colour code some clear TJ lights.
