Hey Guys,

I have been trying to work this out for a while but no go. I have a 2001 TJ VRX with the 5 speed auto. The troubles I am having are as follow:
1st and 2nd gear work a bit but they seem to spin, with the rpm on the tacho much higher than the speed it should be going, and sometimes jerks me into limp mode, where ther "n" light flashes at 1 second intervals.
3rd and 4th go ok
5th gear when in low rpm likes to throw it into limp mode as well, especially in situations such as going up hills.
It does this whether in auto or semi auto mode.
Anyone got any ideas or know a good person in Ballarat to see regarding this?
I have tried changing the input shaft sensor (not the output though as I had trouble getting at it), I checked the ecu and it is all dry(has the plastic cover on it), and swapped over the ecu relay.
There is also quite a long delay when changing from park to drive or reverse.
Any help would be great

Cheers

Sounds like it may be the oil pump on its way out..

Get a transmission flush and try n take a look to see if any metallic bits come out.. That could signify the wave spring on its way out.

Use genuine fluid too..

Ouch, that sounds painful. I'll book it in and see how it goes

Get your pressures checked however this sounds like a typical older or not maintained 5sp auto unfortunately.

Wave spring breaking does not cause the failure, well not directly. If the spring comes apart and makes its way to the sump and stays there then no harm done, IF it gets picked up by the fluid and makes its way through the filter then game over.

Your issues could also come down to things like clutch packs, dirty or worn solonoids or Planetary set about to fail.

Definitely something dodgy going on inside your box mate. Get it flushed out and see what happens. I suspect a few chunks of bearing casing and a bit of wave spring might come out. Bloody 5 speeds.

Sounds expensive - I have heard there is a good mitsubishi guy here in Ballarat. I guess I'll wander down and start saving up

Find someone who can check the error codes before you change fluid or rip it out. Might just be one of the sensors acting up.

I had a wave spring fail a few days ago. I got onto it before the pices made there way past the filter and f#*ked the oil pump, bought a new wave spring and put it in. However you need to locate all the pices of the wave spring and remove them. I have a original unbroken spring I was able to use to pice together the broken parts to ensure I had all the pices out of the box.

This can be done at home if you are good with your hands but I wouldn't tackle it unless you have a good knowledge on these things and a disassembly/re-assembly manual.

Get it flushed. Get the oil filtered. See what comes out.

Also get the codes read. Could be something simple.

Cool, thanks for your advice - I'll try and find a place with the right code reader

Any codes can be read via the "flashing lights" method which is described in the downloadable workshop manual, and is also described in my Ellery Magna workshop manual.

Yeah, I did the flashing lights method by earthing pin 1 and there was just the traction control and ecu light flashing at a constant rate, nothing with the 'n' light. Very strange stuff.
