Hi all
My oil light had come on in my 380. I have checked the oil level and it's fine, but I put a bit more in there any way.
No OBD error codes are reported. The car itself drives okay, it isn't in limp-home mode or any thing like that.
Is there any thing else I can quickly check that might be causing the problem?
Cheers.

The oil pressure sensor is probably stuffed, not sure whether or not it throws a code

Bit of luck it's just a loose connection at the pressure sensor? May have been bumped when the filter was last changed? It's a simple thing to check at least.

After that....? The pressure switch itself maybe? I'd be looking into it seriously though, oil pressure is kind of important.

Be damn careful and DON'T drive it until a proper oil pressure test is done. I have replaced 3 380 motors all up with oil pressure issues, seems to be again on the erly series, the pressure relief valve plays up and especially at or around idle pressure drops and light comes on,

Wilton come up with scan at all, is not related to the ecu system

What's involved in correcting this issue? Is it a matter of upgrading the relief valve in the earlier 380's?

Dont have a 380 yet, it's one the the list of upgrades though and this sounds like something I should be paying attention to

If it sticks open, it's a matter of freeing it up. Bit of a job getting to it though. Probably a dud or disconnected sensor.

Does the engine rattle at idle when the oil light is on?

Max, please don't give advice you know nothing about

The oil pump needs to be changed if this is the issue, the plunger will only end up sticking again.

Op just do the pressure test and don't make guesses. If you can confirm you have correct pressure both cold and hot then you can start looking for the simple things

I've successfully gotten sticking pressure relief plungers on earlier Mitsus to behave by carefully sanding down high spots.
Good time to check of the spring is intact oo.

I just took the car for a quick drive around the block with the engine cold... oil light stayed off for about 10 seconds then came on again.
I haven't been able to check the oil pressure sensor yet as it's been raining most of the night and it's too dark. Will check it during the day.

Max, we are not talking about a 20 year old magna here, the 380 is a different car and this seems to be an issue, you DONT sand down high spots

Minotaur, if you have no light for a little while and the light comes on after a short drive then the switch is fine, the issue is really pressure. Dont drive it, get a guage, take out the sender, connect the guage and watch the pressure

Nothing to check. Buy a new one and swap them over. If that doesn't do it, buy an oil pressure gauge and fit that. As per Mal's post, if it is something serious, you are risking the engine.

Mal beat me to it, don't drive the car.

Max, you are starting to get very frustrating, DONT encourage the OP to drive a car with doubtful pressure. Hopefully it is just the sender BUT unlikely. TEST THE PRESSURE FIRST before serious damage is done

I hear you Mal. Don't drive the car, I certainly would not. 380 engines aren't cheap.

FYI I took the car in to Elizabeth Mitsubishi and they confirmed the oil pressure switch had failed. It's now been replaced.

Thankfully it was only the switch, strange symptom for it to go off and then come back on but certainly very very lucky for you.

Yeah. What was also weird was when I took the car down there, the oil light stayed off for a couple of minutes, then came on while I was stopped at lights, went off again when I accelerated, then came on again (and stayed on) about a minute later.
Anyway, it's all fixed now.
