Hey guys,

Can anyone tell me how to remove the exterior door handles on a TJ Magna? For some unknown reason, someone decided to damage mine and now I have to replace them. I'm guessing that the door trims have to come off, but how hard is it to do?

Here are some pics of what they did:

They also did the same thing to the passenger side mirror, but I know how to replace them.

Thanks in advance.

Replacing the the handle is a bit fiddly.

How to remove:
1) Raise window
2) Remove interior door trim.
3) Once the trim off you will see some rods. The exterior door handle is connected to the roads via a plastic clasp that need to be pop'd open. Use a thin flat blade screwdriver where it claps together and pull on the rod to put pressure on the joint. Access can be difficult and that clasp can get quite hard to undo.
4) The back of the key barrel will have a yellow plastic casing on it connected with some cables running out of the back of it.
5) Get out a 10mm socket and some extension bars. The handle is held in by two screws. One is visible and easily accesible, the other is accessible once you remove the silver square sticker on the door metal.
6) You may find it easier to remove the rods after you've undone the screws and the handle can seperate from the door. Just be careful you don't damage the paint as you muck around with the connecting rods.
7) Remove and replace barrel on the new handle.
8) Rinse and repeat for installation of new handle.

Done!

The handles are held on by 3 bolts not 2 screws, this applies for both front and rear

The fronts are not too bad to remove, once you have the knack with the clips you will be fine. One word of warning, dont take off the yellow switch until you have released the c clip holding the door lock in and then be careful when you remove it as they often tend to snap, without this the cars alarm will not cancel if you use the key to open the door.

Rears if needed are a little more tricky, the door latch can get in the way a bit, sometimes we just remove it and let it drop down to make access easier

Do a search on here for info on removing the door trim. I can't remeber, but I posted asking how to do it to investigate some buzzing noise and someone posted a video link to removing the door trim. It is for the rear door which should be the same for the front door.

Thanks for the help guys :)

Mal, would it be better to just get you to replace them? Because you will already have the doors apart when you install the electric windows and everything?

If that is the case then yes as the doors will be in bits, we also should have sable TL handles here I think that would look a heap better

That would be me :D

Vid is a bit long. Originally just threw up the raw footage to show Vlad but forgot to edit it later. Door trim removal is the first 3min, last 2min is putting it back on.
