View Full Version : Air conditioning condensation leaking into footwell

Hi guys,

Firstly, I've just arrived into the land that mobile internet forgot (aka Sarina), and I have done as much Googling and searching as limited mobile connectivity affords me.
My wife noticed.about half hour before we arrived in town that water was leaking from the passengers side of the dash onto her foot (limited, slow drip).
I removed the glovebox, folded back the carpet (underlay was damp, but not smelly) and removed the side plate on the centre console to find the air con plastic casing heavily condensated with cold water, which extends to the centre dash area, above the ECU.
I'm pretty certain its not the heater core because a) its cold, b) its water and not coolant, and c) the core, seals and pipes were replaced last year.
Is it possible that the aircon is just blowing too cold, and that not using A/C will resolve the issue until I get home at least (1000km and 5 days away)?
I pulled the 90 degree rubber fitting out of the firewall, blew it out and refitted, it SEEMS to allow more water out now. But aside from that, I'm baffled as to what I can do to prevent further moisture in the area.

Any constructive ideas appreciated!

Thanks! :)

Could be the pipe is partly blocked in the box itself, get something to gently poke back into the drain hole in the evap box, dust does tend to build up, add a few leaves that have blown in past the fan and there is the blockage

Thanks for that, Mal!

Poke back into the evap box from the firewall?
I did lightly poke the drain hole and the screwdriver came back out with some slimy grey/brown gunk with what could be a small blade of grass.
Poking all the way back, the hole seems to be half/partially obscured by the evap box/core, does that sound right? (otherwise I have a pretty solid blockage!)

If it is hot where you are, just run the fan with aircon off, should dry things out.
Did you smell the water that dripped down? Coolant has a distinctive smell, whereas the water from the aircon smells pretty putrid, smelly socks and B.O. is the closest I can describe it. lol

Thanks Max, but it is definitely not coolant, its condensation from the casing, and external to the system thus has no smell.

Not in my experience. Atmospheric water from the cabin condenses on the evaporator in the box, then drips down and flows out the car. It collects smells from the cabin and any decaying leaves, and has a real strong smell to it. Especially if the water has been sitting there for a while because the outflow is blocked.

If it is clear, non-smelly water, I'd more likely suspect rain water intrusion. Had much rain recently where you are?

Max, if the water from your evap unit is that bad clean it, it should be pretty much clean clear water IF the system is flowing the water out

It is near impossible for coolant to go in the evap box give it is higher anyway

Also not sure how rain water can get through into the car and the work its way UP into the evap box. Is cleary humid where OP is located and this is simply condensation that is not all getting out

In this instance, we had driven from Ipswich, west of Brisbane; to Sarina, just south of Mackay. 11.5 hours straight (9.30pm to 9am) constant A/C, through a mild (20-25ish degree outside) evening and morning.
I can say for pretty much certain it was condensation, given the position and coldness of the moisture when inspecting.

I had a similar problem with a Pajero. It was caused by the drain through the firewall being blocked with gunge
