My handbrake doesn't lift off whenever I'm in reverse, so I spend my whole life reverse parking everywhere to get a straight exit. But if its just the cable, a replacement and labour (optional) shouldn't be too far north of $100.
Worst case scenario, if you have to replace the douchebag mechanism that sits just behind the wheel, price suddenly jumps up to $600.

Rubbish, even if the banksia shoe has broken no where near $600
John, no one can tell you price until you know specifically the issue, usually is the bracket on the cable which bolts to the caliper. New cable oem is about $80 and fitting about 1 hour with adjustment

basically while i was pulling it up there was a loud bang and the car started rolling.the left cable is waaay loose so maybe that it has broken.also have fears for the right cable as it is still tight but not holding anything
You need to take the rear wheel off and see how and where the damage is done.
Similar thing happened to me, in my case it was to do with the hand brake pin coming off in the actuator lever mechanism...

You need to check if you have the same problem.

Thanks ego but for peace of mind the cables have been replaced with two OEM ones.turns out one was broken and the mechanic reccomended to replace both
One question though, will the carpet need to be removed to replace them??

No just centre console.
thanks mate.also confirmed this with a Mitsubishi Mechanic who said this as well
also to add, he says that the pin is the weak point in the park brake system as adjusted too tight it snaps the cable.adjusted too loose and it falls out :O

Cable replaced
Also found that somehow when the handbrake shoe lining was released,a giant chunk was broken off so getting that replaced monday due to no parts store having stock!!
