I've read all the threads and it seems this is a good bolt on muffler! Does anyone know if it's a bolt on for the AWD and if not, does anyone know an alternative bolt on for the AWDs? It's about time the magna made some more noise.....

If you want more noise dont use a bolt on. They are very quiet

Full size (same as stock size) straight through mufflers are only marginally louder than the stock baffled muffler on your AWD.
You will have to go for a smaller size straight through muffler for more noise.

This will either require modification to the flange pipe or relocation of the joiners or both.
Personally I love the sound of the magnaflows but they can be pricey, so best to buy online and find the best deal. I have replaced the muffer of my AWD with the equivalent size Magnaflow and while not that much louder than stock, has such a beefy tone that the lukeys, redback, VRX etc can't match.

You can get the same type of magnaflow but smaller if you want to go louder. Some advise, leave the resonator on your AWD. they sound bloody awful & raspy without them.

Probably the best Magnaflow muffler for a Magna, including an AWD, is the model # 14586.

22" long x 11" x 5" polished stainless steel.

From all reports, a good deep note without any drone.

I would have a pair on my 380 if I wasn't worried that they won't fit, as 22" long is OK for a Magna but a bit too long for a 380.

Best place I've found for price is Summit Racing in the good ol' US of A.

If you just want noise, get a shop to rip a muffler out.

Cheaper then buying a whole other muffler, just for the noise.

Yes TreeAdeyMan, that is the same model muffler as I have (14586) & I can confirm your description of the sound.

As for freight from the USA, expect to pay around $75 USD sent by USPS and it'll take around 2 weeks.
Bought mine a wee bit cheaper on motors.ebay BTW.
Even with the postage from USA it still works out around $120 cheaper than buying them locally.

Locally these magnaflows are around $320 plus postage.

For crying out loud, it's not a bank breaking excercise to upgrade to a sports muffler :-S
AWD magnas only have the one muffler so that would be pointless and sounds like crap anyway.
Started mine up when the original muffler was off for the upgrade, sounded OK on idle and low revs, but at WOT it just barked like a dog.

For more (good quality) noise just a quality straight through muffler that's smaller than the stock unit.

The link below is for a Magnaflow centre/offset 18" long x 5" x 8" Polished stainless straight through & smaller than the stock AWD muffler, will need either the front or rear hangers extended to fit. Although probably best to fit direct onto the flange pipe & extend the outside hanger & fit a longer exhaust tip.
And will give a nice volume increase while still sounding shmick being Magnaflow.

Didn't know that.... Is it worthwhile buying a muffler and having somewhere install it for me then? As bolt ons arent particularly loud

The AL4-5597 isn't a bolt-on fit for the AWDs, however I understand that the LR-2779 is the same muffler without the pipe extension to the flange.

I know :P but its an option!

What about Hooker Aeroflows? I've heard good things about them.

Yes it is, just don't tell them that you bought your muffler online as some of them can get a bit irate about losing a component sale to online competition.

Any muffler, bolt on or otherwise, that's the same size as the one you are replacing isn't going to be that much, if any louder - larger mufflers have larger chambers and more damping material making them quieter as more sound is absorbed, than their smaller counterparts.

Larger doesn't always mean quiter. Depends on the internal structure of the muffler. Straight through v bent/"S" designs, baffles, resonance chambers, perforations, helmholtz chambers, fibreglass stuffing etc

A standard muffler like this (from a US Nissan Titan),

Is gonna be a lot quieter then an aftermarket, like this Magnaflow, of the same size.

Two of the same type of mufflers being compared side by side, the smaller one will always be the louder of the two. That's one of points without going into semantics.

My baffled stock muffler is barely quieter that my Magnaflow, straight through type, in fact it is no louder at idle or low throttle. According to you, it should be much louder than the stock one it replaced. But it isn't.
Magnaflow 14586 is actually listed as an SUV truck muffler because of it's size and is quieter than the equivalent configured 14256 because its, wait for it.......Larger!!

True, the Magnaflow 14586 has alot of negitive reviews. Like you said, its just too dang quiet! :( But thats just one line from one brand.

What i'm trying to say is not to assume bigger will always be quiter.

I implied the same muffler type Kiddo, I'm not being overly specific here, as I don't want to get into long drawn out discussions on the different muffler configurations.

So for the sake of any further discussion, my smaller is louder analogy is in relation to the same muffler type & configuration unless otherwise noted.

I take exception to the 14586 being too dang quiet though as you put it.
Actually it isn't really much, if any quieter than the straight through type mufflers from Lukey's LR2779 or even the stock magna VRX mufflers that I've heard.
It just has that deeper more sonorous note that the other 2 don't have. You can't compare the tone of the magnaflows to the OEM or other generic semi-straight throughs.
Weather it's too quiet or not is really up to the user's personal preference.
Obviously it's not loud enough for some of the SUV owners in the US who are usually the ones posting complaints about it's relative lack of loudness.

Either way, it's a given that the 14586 will be too quiet for the poster of this thread as he wants noise. Hence my suggestion for the smaller straight through 14256.

I'm looking at getting the AL4-5597 for a 3.0L TF, and have a couple of questions. Firstly, is it a direct bolt-on, or do you need flange or something? What about a gasket where you bolt on? Do you need one, and if so, does it come with the muffler?

I queried the price at Supercheap Auto, and it was $227. I believe that is a decent price, but is there anywhere that is cheaper still?

Thanks!

Yes it's a direct bolt on, but as the Lukey does not have the nut/thread part welded into the flange, you have to get 3 M10 bolt with nuts. You might be able to see what I mean here in this photo:
