Howdy Everyone,

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on my ignorance. The concept of "flashing my ROM" has grabbed my interest but, my searching has only led to greater confusion. As stated in the Title, I have a 2000 TH Sports 5 speed manual.

I'm curious about the differences between the two programs, EvoScan and TOAD, which one is more user friendly and especially for my vehicle. My main issue is figuring out which OBD cable to use, 1.3U or 2.0. What I gather from the EvoScan website, I only need the 1.3U in order to flash my ECU. I also, believe the #9 pin needs to be pulled from the cable. However, reading WytWun's thread (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89584), I'm under the impression that I need the 2.0 cable.

My aim is to be able to read and diagnose issues, as well as possibly flash to run on 95RON or Rally specs (Don't know if possible. The engine is a stock standard 3.5L Sports ).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I think I found my answer to the "which OBD cable to use."

Thanks to WytWun's post

"TH manual/auto can be read with an OpenPort 1.3U cable with an older version of ECUFlash - v1.40 was the last version to support this. Select the Evo 5/6 vehicle type. Otherwise an OpenPort 2.0 cable is required.
WARNING: don't attempt to flash these ECUs with an unmodified OpenPort 1.3U cable - you should use an OpenPort 2.0 cable to flash these ECUs safely. The 1.3U cables can't supply enough current at the 16V flashing voltage to ensure a reliable flash, which is why later versions of ECUFlash don't support using 1.3U cables with H8 ECUs."

I'm still open to input and advice :)

As far as I can determine the TOAD software cannot log Magna ECUs as it doesn't support the MUT protocol and cannot be used to reflash Mitsubishi H8 or SH2 ECUs.

Thanks much,

I'm assuming for my needs than, I'd be best off with the Evoscan + ECUFlash software and the 2.0 cable with mitsu connector. Only thing is, if I'm correct, is that the 2.0 cable does not work with Live Mapping/Tuning?

You also need a ROM that has been hex edited to include the live tuning capability too... I doubt that this has been created for a Magna tbh. I've created something that works for VR4 - but it's far from polished. I've ported this to a Magna too as my bench ECU is a magna ECU plus i've played with mates Magna heaps.

There isnt much difference in the cables when using it for MUT2... 1.3 is just a FTDI RS232 to USB, and the openport 2.0 acts as a j2534 interface.

The Openport 2.0 is the better choice as it complies (mostly) to SAE standards (especially with voltage output for reflash connector), thus you can use it with many different cars (ISO9141, canbus, etc) and any app that supports a PassThru J2534 interface.

The openport 1.3 only supports ISO9141 (K line/L Line).

Thanks once again for the input. I think I'm going to go off and view a few tutorials and scan a few more forums before moving ahead any further. Definitely feel more confident, however.
