I need to see if anyone here knows how to fix my horn.. The horn has been replaced with a working one, the fuses are fine so apparently there is a spring behind the steering wheel which may not be working and needs to get replaced..

I have no idea how to do it....

Sorry all i could think of after reading 'horn broken' was 'Watch for finger' :facejump::facejump::hmm::hmm::io:

It can be the contacts between the horn pad and the wheel, I put a 3rd gen wheel on my TR and found that the contacts were all corroded so the horn wouldn't work.

Easy fixed though, just cleaned up the copper contacts on both sides and hey presto, horn works.

To get the horn pad off on pretty much all the mitsu wheels just hold it either side with two hands and give it a good pull, might feel like its going to break, but it won't.

Have to undo anything? What about the airbag?

Ahhh sheet, forgot about airbags :P

Not sure about taking them apart then, but I think from memory the contacts were the same.

The clock spring is what disengages your indicators when the wheel is returned to center and also what the horn wiring goes through, I think?

There is a torx screw on either side of the hornpad behind the steering wheel. Undo these 2 screws and the hornpad will easily pull off giving you access to the horn contacts.

The airbag will not deploy unless you disconnect the wire behind it (and even then it shouldn't). If you want to be extra sure this wont happen, or if you are planning on disconnecting the airbag disconnect the battery and put your foot on the brake for a few seconds to drain any possible remaining charge in the electrical system.

Plus 1 for this.
having the drivers door open will also drain the current. I always disconnect the battery and undo the wire at the back and all is swell!

matt, have you tried shorting the horn out to see if it is working? could be a dead horn pad?

Have you tried replacing the fuse/relay??

Might also get more of a response mate posting this in the tech thread rather than the SA section....

Replaced fuses already lol. I posted it in here for the hope someone in sa knows how to fix it when an interstate person isn't much help

Not quite sure on airbag models but on my non-airbag Magna, there was a wire running from the slipring, to the horn pad. this wire is 12v active from the horn circuit, and if you touch it to the metal parts in the steering wheel the horn activates.

IIRC on airbag vehicles it's a single wire with a clear-ish insulation bit of plastic on it which connects to the horn pad (basically, the non thick yellow cable as that's the airbag) you should be able to pop the cable out and on the car side, tap it against the metal. If you get a toot-toot, then you know your horn pad is stuffed. The bad news is that if you have an airbag its 100% safer just to replace the whole horn/airbag assembly.

I just took one apart

The airbag hornpad has springs for horn contact while the non airbag doesent.there is also a part of the clockspring that can come off so careful.

it will be more likely your clockspring. did it to me l changed the clock spring and worked again do you have Cruise Control????? if so it that working still???

yeah have cruise control and still working.. sounds hard/dangerous to change incase airbag goes off...

Probably a bad earth in the hornpad

Ok, what model do you have for starters as the E and F series work differently to the H onwards

Ok, single wire horn, test for power at the wire when horn pad depressed, if no power check rely in the engine bay box, you should hear it clicking, perhaps try changing that first as often they will still click but will not contact. If still no good go back to the horn pad. The airbag will not just deploy if removed, they have a safety pin in them when you unplug them there is a contact in the bag plug which shorts out the 2 pins thus not allowing any current to go to the bag and make it deploy.

Check your contacts on the airbag/horn pad set up are contacting.

If still no good could still be a damaged clock spring where only 1 track has failed thus the SRS and Cruise are still working, a continuity test of each pin will immediately tell you this

Is a simple matter of having a good test light, Jaycar now sell a great little device, is a circuit tester which has no ground cable. Is perfect for what you need to do, little light comes on when 12v is detected, if your other hand is on the body ground of the car a little beeper works as well. Follow above and you should be able to fix the issue

Thanks mate u truly are a legend. I replaced the horn with a third one and then replaced the rely and now it works. Thanks heaps. Another question is is there a way u can attach a second horn so it's louder?

A fair few people have put 380 horns in which I would believe to have a significant difference, otherwise Veada's have 2 tone horns which would sound different (maybe louder?) I'm thinking of a horn upgrade myself.

well the new horn sounds like a girls horn lol. very high pitched. Do the 380 horns just clip in same as the other ones or different connections?

Matt, seeing as you are heading back to u-pull-it, find a falcon el/ef or even a au and get the TWO HORNS that you will find behind the bumper, take BOTH horns, the brackets and the wiring loom, just cut it back past the connection, make sure it is a model with two horns, as these are a high and low tone, the horns are marked with a H and L, so, don't make the mistake and grab two horns from two cars, call me for wiring instructions,
