G'day All,

So I bought a strut brace finally, and went to install it today..

However, it seems that when I had the car lowered, the tyre monkeys redid the strut tops up with a rattle gun..

Tried with a shifter, nearly rounded it.

Went and bought a proper 14mm shifter - definitely nearly rounded it.

How does one remove a nut that's been put on with >9000nm of torque? I'm guessing they used the same rattle gun that did up most of the Harbour Bridge in NSW..

Keep that dam shifter away from your car. Put on the correct socket size and put a long pipe on the end of it. Then gently pull it loose. Thats how I did up the crankshaft bolt on an rb26 to 350nm :) 1.5m long steel pipe.

Solid idea, I'll grab some polypipe at work on monday.

Cheers man

Make sure it's a hex socket (six sided) and not an ordinary socket (12 sided).

And I dunno about poly pipe, I'm guessing it could shatter with the amount of torque needed.

Better to use a nice solid piece of metal pipe.

Trolley jack handle.

Those nuts are not supposed to be that tight. Anything more than 150nm is where you start to risk the thread. I would take it back to the tyre place and have a whinge. Guaranteed they used an air powered impact wrench.

The strut top nuts at 150nm would sheer off before they even got that tight I would think, if you get stuck drop past and I have a breaker bar that will either loosen the nuts or take the studs off with them :)

The thing to be concerned about is the stud getting stretched and then breaking

Those bolts should take IIRC 39 to 49nm of torque, wheels take 100nm per nut so thats a good indication.

Plus one for sliding a pole or bar over the handle however be careful, if the poles inner diameter is too big you can strip them anyway.

Also I just undid mine I found an imperial socket that was a much better fit then a 14mm socket, cant recall the size though but it was very easy.

9/16 single hex may work on a 14mm if has been rounded

I might pop in on the way to the Island tomorrow if that's alright Mal, Six sided def needed as I've shagged the edges on the first nut I had a go at with the socket - still enough to get purchase though

Also, if the studs come off - arent they attached to the top of the suspension?

Yes, I know that's a nub question, but being carless again would eat dick

*edit*
Grouse, I'll get there early Mal
