View Full Version : Startup after head gasket replacement

Well I finally got around to replacing the head gasket today, and did the stem seals while the head was out. When I put it back together it wouldn't start and the light got the better of me. My question is if there is TDC for the compression stroke as well as TDC for the exhaust stroke? I had the pulley on TDC but later thought that I should have checked the cylinder or dizzy to make sure it was right. I now suspect that my timing is 180 degrees out. Is what I am thinking about TDC correct?

Good tip about the compression test. Thank you

Only had a small amount of time to play around with it today but got the timing sorted and the car started. Still need to do some fine tuning and sort out my vacuum hoses but at least I have moved forward and got it started. When I had the head off I had to remove the water pump belt and just moving the pump a small amount has buggered the o-ring and it now leaks like a sieve. Couldn't get an o-ring from Repco as they had the right diameter but it was too thin. There is another thread on here about the difficulty in getting the right size. I will try Bursons tomorrow and see how I go. Has anyone else got one of these o-rings recently?

Magnaman,
I tried to get TDC on the compression stroke with the compression tester hooked up but it didn't work for me. I ended up taking the rocker cover off again and had marked the sprocket and chain before I pulled it apart so kept rotating the motor until these lined up again. Took a heel of a lot of turns though until they lined up again! so it wasn't TDC on the compression stroke but it was as it was when I pulled it down so was able to get it back together as it was and get it started.
