Hey all,
My clutch is on its way out, so I was going to get my long time failing 2nd gear synchro taken care of. I considered doing my apprenticeship on the box, but looking through the manual... seems a tad tricky! I dont want a second hand box as who knows what Im buying. And I dont want to send it off as I dont feel like getting shafted. Was wondering if maybe someone else has been in a similar situation? Someone knows someone? Any replies would be appreciated!

I have just done this myself, I only replaced the input shaft bearings though, doing the synchros requires pulling the shafts down entirely which is a bit more work. It's quite a big job, and you will need various tools you probably won't have if you've never done it before.
I would honestly gauge it on how much work you've done yourself before. If you've done a clutch job or two then it might be worth taking on.. if you've never done anything as big as a clutch job then well.. I'd be looking for a handy friend who has at the very least. :)]
I'm now at the point I can do that stuff myself but having done it about 3 times with various levels of helps from mates/mechanic mates, and probably $500-1000 in tools.

I wouldn't go pulling a gearbox apart blind. Probably a job to be left with a transmission specialist. Rebuilds are half the price of an auto.
I know you don't want to leave it with someone but if you explain exactly what needs to be done, and agree on a price, you should be ok.

Well dad is a mechanic and has repaired them in his younger years. Though looking at the manual, it looks quite scary! Plus I dont want my car off the road for too long...
You guys have given me something to think about anyway... Appreciate your input!
