Hey all,

This has been going on for ages but now its just annoying me not knowing the cause or issue!

My car upon start up always taps for at least 5 minutes and this its gone until the engine cools again, i dont know if this is a bad thing or not, and i tend to just wait until its gone before i drive just in case.

Is there any problems with this? And if so can i fix it so it doesn't happen any more?

Any help is much appreciated.

Mitch

Strt it, run it a few seconds, turn off for a minute and restart

Let me know the result

Oil flow problems to the upper engine? When was your last oil change?

Once the oil thins with heat its probably getting into the tappets more easily, the tapping is probably from the tappets/lifters/hydraulic lash adjusters (all the same thing with different names) a proper flush and refilling with a proper oil like Penrite HPR10 might help this if not you can pull the tappets and rocker arms out, clean them in diesel and refit otherwise replacing the tappets has worked for me in the past.

What oil are you using? and how many k's has the car done?

I am assuming it is the tappets, when i first got the car it wasn't doing it much at all, but i got it serviced and after they changed the oil it started tapping a lot before it warmed up!

The car has done 300,000km, a lot i know, but it still runs well and has been looked after!

Do you think im using an oil that is too thick? Im basically just using a thick, high kilo-meter oil for older engines?

My 2003 AWD Sports 'taps' on startup occasionally. Probably 5 times since I bought it in February I've noticed the sound, but it has gone away within 30 seconds until yesterday. It did it long enough to pop the hood and it seemed to be coming from the driver's side, near the belts area. Not sure if it was the engine itself or something near there. The tapping faded then stopped within probably 2 minutes. I don't know if I should have posted this in a new thread, but it is definitely a tapping sound similar to the original poster.
