View Full Version : Reverse light delay

Today, I wired a delay relay in to my reverse lights so they wait about half a second after Reverse is selected before they come on. I know that some other members have discussed doing this to avoid their HID/LED reverse lights flashing on briefly when shifting from Park to Drive.
While I didn't take any pics, it was easy enough to do. I cut both wires going to the reverse lights (red/blue wires) and routed one of them in to the delay relay. The other one remains disconnected. On the other side of the relay I wired in both the "light" side of the reverse wires.
Now I can shift through Park to Drive (and vice versa) without the reverse lights flashing.
One unintended side-affect though: My reverse sensors (and reverse camera) also wait that half a second before activating as well - seems like I cut in to the circuit before these devices read the wire for a signal.

ive got to ask, why does the brief flash of reverse lights bother you enough to fit the delay relay?

ive never heard of anyone doing this before

well, when you have HID reverse lights ,it isnt real good to be flicking through and turning off the ballast so quickly

Yep, definitely worth putting in for old farts like me with lousy night vision.
I can now see where I an going at night in reverse, when with stock globes it was like driving blind.
Michael put mine in about a year ago, using the HID bits from my failed experiment with HID front lights.

Where did you get the delay relay you used? Is it 'programmable' for different delay times?

The LED's I bought are these:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/160877303838?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
FYI, I offered US$15 and the offer was accepted, so try going below that if you want - might save a bit more.

The relay I bought was one of these:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/130643833022?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
It does 0-5 seconds, but others can be had that do different times.

Maggie, I have 1 or 2 relays spare (I bought 4) so I can give you a hand fitting one if you like.

FYI the LED's linked above are damn bright, and they are "instant on" (well at least they were before I put the delay relay in) - no warm-up time needed.

They fit mine with no problem, couldn't say for sure if they'd fit in yours as it looks like you have a GT, but I'd be surprised if they don't fit.

Cool, those look good. Mine don't project out sideways, but they're so bright it doesn't really matter.
We can talk about a time/place to do it at the meet on Wednesday.

Is it the 11W ?

i would go for the one that actually seems to have the "windows " in it ,this must surely give out more light and be able to fill the reflector and have the spot light in it as well.

da fook..........50 watt....need to wire in a relay for these babies !!!!!

Wow, aren't some spotlights only 50W aren't they? Someone has to try them!

Odd that those globes are 50W but I cant find any actual headlight type sockets with leds over 11W

I got one of those delay relays (albeit with the square base and not DIN base) to delay the reverse camera and sensors by 0.5 seconds. Being wanting brighter reverse lights but mine are actually adequate enough such that the reverse camera (without LEDs) is clear.

Maybe it's a 50W "equivalent" - like the energy-saving fluro lights in your house, they're 18W, but put out light equivalent to a 120W old-style light globe.

I like using these flat side firing lights where you only need to focus and shine the light in one direction ,works great in the number plate position and great in vanity and c-pillar lights.

Just the front parkers now but not sure which T10's to order and whether I can get my old fat fingers to do the changeover

Well the T10 LED's arrived today so being on hols I couldnt wait to try them
What a job!
I reckon they were a gnats kneecap too wide. I couldnt get a rat tail file in the hole to widen it so had to trim every LED on the sides with a stanley blade. Just scraping a flake off so they would fit through the hole. Well they are in and look great (to me)
I cant see me ever being able to pull them back out without them falling into the headlamp
I also had to scrape a flake off each side of the holder end
Good tip to try them before installing as they only work one way round.
All in all look good
Thanks for all the advice
Wont post pics as I am sure everyones seen them fitted
Like an idiot I ordered 3 not realising it was 3 pairs so I have 4 spares...... Wonder where I can use them??

Sorry Chris, I forgot to add in my PM that even the 10mm are a tight fit and usually need some trimming. I filed back the edges on mine with a metal file, rather than hacking away at them with a Stanley knife!

As for the spares, they work as rear number plate lights. Way whiter & brighter than the stock globes.

They might also work in the front cabin lights, I know I had a pair like these in there before I switched to a 24 LED square panel in each. But not sure these won't be too big/long to fit in the cabin lights, as I suspect the ones I used before were a bit smaller/shorter.

I do know that white bright SMD LEDs are 1000% better cabin lights than the horrible stock yellow things.
