View Full Version : KL/W to KJ styling?

Is it feasible to buy a KL/W Verada and make it look like a KJ?
By feasible I mean is the color range the same between them?
Do the panels bolt straight on?
And, would a wrecker be willing to do a trade deal with maybe a slight cash adjustment?

Panels are not straight swap ie from front screen forward is all different and would involve significant work

Question is...why would you want to? The KL/W Style is much rarer than KJ.....why look like most other cars when you can have at least a more unique look.

My initial thinking was the KL/W has the more reliable transmission, is safer with side airbags, has EBD (I think KJ doesn't have this), nicer seat trim which seems to wear better, rear passenger vents, lower, newer, nice rims and the list goes on, however the exterior styling just looks too ridiculous in my opinion to the point where I simply could not drive that car, whereas to me the KJ looks very good

Mitsubishi was under no obligation to make the bodywork and electrics of the KL/KW backwards compatible with the KJ, so you could expect a lot of fiddly problems making this work.
As for finding a wrecker who has good panels off a KJ in your colour, and is prepared to do a swap, for only a small amount of money, forget it. Good KL/KW panels are rarer than KJ panels, why would he?
Got both a 2004 Lancer and 2004 TL in the family, both with the same front, the looks grow on you. Honestly. Same as the TJ with the Gonzo beak. Anyhow, when you are driving it, who cares what the front looks like?
Look for a good KJ or KL/KW, whatever look you are after. You will find the KL/KW harder to find and priced much higher, but it is the better car. (Got a TJ as well as the Lancer and TL.)
In my opinion, the pre TJ models look better than the TJ or TL/TW, anyway.

So what are you trying to say Max as the OP wants a L or W and then wants to put a J front on the car.....
The rad support and upper skirts are different on the L and W series thus while it could be done would be a hell of a job and require a lot of structural work to be done

Yep, there would be a lot of cutting and welding needed on the front underpanel bits. lol
Not worth the effort in my opinion. Get it wrong and panels won't line up. Probably would need an engineering certificate too.
I'm suggesting he decides whether he wants a TJ shape or TL/TW shape, then go buy one, and not try to modify one to look like the other. Simple.

Buy the car you want the looks of. If it's KJ, get a KJ. A lot of fiddling, a lot of money and for what? So no one can tell the difference at all? Not picking just saying what's always talked me out of major panel replacements - who's going to care if I replace my bumper for a verada one, or the front bumper for a Verada one. AMC members and enthusiasts might notice, but very rarely where I live plus it's just wasted money for no performance gain or change in the ride itself.

Thanks guys,
Yes I would only consider this an option if everything bolted on and I could get the panels in the right color.
As it stands it is way too much trouble
