G'day All, I've read a few post about manual conversions to a first gen.
My current daily drive is manual, but I have another EFI TP Auto that I'm giving to my little brother when he gets his licence later this year.
He really prefers driving manual, so i was looking at the possibility of a manual conversion.
If anyone has any info, it'd be much appreciated.
I need to know:
What parts are needed
which parts are cross compatible (TM-TN-TP) (I know there were at least 2 different manual boxes)
Is it an incredibly tricky job
any general tips or important notes
cheers in advance.

Best to buy a complete car so you have all whats needed to convert.
You will need
Flywheel and bolts
Clutch plate,pressure plate etc
gearbox
Clutch hydraulic setup including piping
gearshift mechanism and associated parts
Clutch pedal.
You can use the same ECU if you wish just need to change/join the wiring when you disconnect the inhibitor switch to allow it to start and for reverse lights to function when you select reverse.
Can use the same instrument cluster if you wish or swap if you have a model that has the PRND21 display in the cluster and you want rid of it.
All TM TN TP parts interchangeable the later TP box the best but either will do the job. Thats in a nutshell.
Pretty run of the mill job but if you have not done it before just takes a bit longer.
Clutch plate alignment tool would be the only special thing you would need. Vee

i found no difference in the engine from manual to auto. you need to remove the spigot bush that the torque converter uses, i used multigrips. ive removed a few manual pedal boxes and none have had any weld on them, just two bolts through the fire wall onto the master cylinder and two up into the bottom of the plenum under the windscreen. its easily accessible to put washers and nuts on the other side. mine has been in for 3 years without welding and hasnt presented an issue thus far.
overall its pretty easy, probably two days work for someone who hasnt done it before, one day for engine and auto out, then mount pedal and selector and another day to drop it all in and get it working.
the ecu is the same, the efi relay isnt, driveshafts are the same but the relay shaft and mount isnt, engine mounts are different but the brackets that have 2 mount holes in them are the same.
there is enough of us on here that have done it to help, doug is another who knows the conversion. if it isnt already efi ide do that at the same time
good luck,
jay

yeah thats the 2.0 cam belted motors used in the Mitsi L300's. Magna astrons all the same. Sigma's might be like that but never worked on any of them. Vee

Sigma manuals had about 6 different clutch plates, depending on the engine size and gearbox make. lol
I think the auto/manual starter motors are different on the gen 1 Magnas though?

There is actually a bracket that is not present in the automatics that 'should' be welded on to the underside firewall in the cabin.
4 spot welds drills it out and then simply bolt it to the pedal box, 2 tacks, then put a couple of solid welds top and bottom.
starters are the same.
