Driving a 1997 Magna TF. Car suddenly loses power & doesn't respond until put accelerator right to floor. Very dangerous. Almost like the accelerator cable is sticking. Done 120,000km. Have replaced timing belt, , all injectors cleaned, 3 new platinum plugs to rear cylinders, new airflow meter & checked catalytic convertor (OK). But the problem is STILL there! Any suggestions? Might it be the oxygen sensor? Thanks Ted.

Have you checked the condition of the accelerator cable? It may be fraying
Check your throttle body as well, it may be dirty/sticky/heavily varnished, get a can of Subaru Upper Cylinder Cleaner, follow the instructions on the can and clean the inlet of the throttle body, butterfly and beyond the butterfly thoroughly.

Thanks ammerty. Will (try and) check the accelerator cable - not sure how.....would be nice if that was the problem. TedC.

Doubt is a cable issue as you would not then be able to floor the pedal

Main thing that this is caused by is a bad ignition module in the dist.

Many thanks MadMagna. I will get it to an auto electrician to test this. Trust it's not too expensive after all the solutions I've tried so far. TedC.

Does it only happen when the engine warms up a bit?
My old VL Commodore had an issue that sounds similar but only when the engine warmed up. Was fine until then.
The issue in that case was that the exhaust manifold was warped about 1/8th of an inch.

Well I had the oxygen sensor replaced a week ago (total cost $220) and the car is going like new! Amazing. Just wish I'd done this 2 months ago! TedC.
