Gday
Im in the process of making a 3stage shift light/rev limiter for my TP. What to you guys think I should set the limiter to. I never get to red line and mostly change at 3000~. I was thinking about 5000 to leave room for max power but not too much wear on the engine.
I'll probably never hit it but its nice to know if U miss a gear its not gonna valve bounce.
Do 2.6l Astrons sound cool when they hit the limiter? My m8s protoge sounds wikkid...but then again his is at 6500. The only reason I wanna know is I might put in a switch to drop the limit to 3500 or something so I can get the sound without the massive revs.
Oh yeah, would 12ga heavy duty wire be big enough to short the coil for 1-2 seconds?

it depends... y do u want to set the rev limiter lower than it is? just for the sound? dont forget, if u change at 5500 as opposed to 5000, u will b higher in the rev range for the next gear and so higher up in the power band. take it for a drive and change at different revs and c wat feels better. hope that makes sense im half asleep. hope its a manual u are gunna put a shift light on :bowrofl: ... hey, my mate saw a 5" tacho with shift light on an auto holden statesman before. now that was a laugh lol
most cars sound sick wen they hit rev limiter  least hes hitting it in a protege and not a magna.

my tp seems to loose its toque at about 5k havent been game to push it harder than that with the timing chain how its is  when i have some spare bucks to throw it at it ill get the chain kit for $110 not bad for chain guides etc it will probly cost me 3x that to have it fitted, what can i say the old 1st gen has grown on me and is here to stay, rust shoping drolly dings etc are on the to do list also friends dad is a pannel beater seen his work and im impressed and the price is good too

At the moment I havent got a limiter, I have a TS engine with all the injection and computerised gear taken off. Yes it is a manual, would never touch an auto anything...except for a Hummer.... I wanted it below 6000 cause I dont like pushing the revs too high, I rarely get past 4000.
I dont drag, I just cruise, I like the sound and the look on peoples faces when it hits second stage at 2800 and roars off like its still got a turbo:D (second stage of the 41/46 weber).
Looks like I'll have to try a few different speeds but I rekon about 5 is best for my driving. As for the limiter at lower revs...might give it a miss if its gonna sound like poo.
Max power on a stock engine is at 4800 with max torque at 2800??? What should happen to these figures with bigger intake and exhaust would they rise or fall?

its really up to u where u set it but i wouldnt be putting it at like 5000 as u might need for sum reason i dunno to go further and u cant cos it will be bouncing around 5000
i take it you cars carby as the efis have a rev limiter..ive never hit it cos the astrons sound sh1t and go weird after like 6000. even tho the fact astrons sounds like vaccum cleaners that are like 30years old so just the fact of hearing a 30 year old vaccum cleaning bouncing at a rev limiter sends shivers down my spine lol . the only time they really have a sick as tone is around 3000 - 4000
edit:just read you do have a carby!!

:bowrofl: thats about wen my secondarys kick in. mine definately dosent sound like a vacuum cleaner then lol... i was coming out of uni a few weeks ago and there was lots of traffic so i stabbed it. this woman in a white 3rd gen i saw was just minding her own business then as i stabbed it she turned to look straight at me. i cracked up laughing :bowrofl: damn it was funny... and this is just induction.

You like the sound of hitting the limiter???
Personally to me it sounds like the looney driving the car can't remember to change gears - car starts jerkin around - oh **** maybe i should change gears  .
Do you have an aftermarket ignition system for the car or something?
Setting it really low like 3500 could be kinda silly, what if your put in a situation where u have to get out of there quickly? Theres not much usable power below 3000 is there. Thats where the next gear is gonna be when u change. Your gonna have to remember to have ur finger on the switch.
i reckon it sounds awesome on a really high performance car
like when a rally car is at the start line ready to go
the efi sorts out the fuel cut when the revs go beyond a certain point, so its it carb theres no limiter...
you should probly set it to around 5100-5200 as a limit, (unless you have a bigger cam shaft) cos thats all the standard cam is optimised for

it was wet this morning on the way to work and i was in "the mood" had some fun wheel spin in 1 & 2nd gear efi rev limititer kicked in 5500 - 6k :( in 1st and 2nd gear but for a bog stock astron im not complaining even in the dry it breaks loose easy seems to have alot of life left in the motor, lol almost at work and cleaned up a galah of all dam things so close to going into the grill of my TP-GT at 80kph it hit on the nose cone and slamed onto the bonnet, poor thing i didnt feel bad untill i had to wash the blood feathers & innards off the bonnet with my boss :bowrofl: at me :doubt: in the carpark behind work, no damage to paintwork tho :)

Well, mine definatley doesent sound like a vacuum cleaner, spesh when the secondarys on the big old weber kick in. As for likeing the sound of the limiter, it depends on the car but my m8s car definatley does sound cool, Ive never heard an astron on the limiter.
What situstion would you need to be going harder than 5000 revs??? after that the power goes down and its better to change gears as you'll be at the middle of the main power range when you engage.
Ive decided on 5000-5200 depending on how the power feels on the day. I was only thinking of having the switch to lower the limit to 3500 as a momentary push switch, could be kinda dangerous if it was on when I needed the power not to die.
