Well, I think it is a resonator . . . lol Box just after the catalytic converter on the TL wagon.
Just looked at it, holes at the bottom of the end plates at both ends.
First time I've really looked at a Mitsu exhaust system, in 20 odd years, never had one rust anywhere - not to the extent of having holes and being noisy, anyway.
Doesn't look like an easy DIY replacement job, it's a one piece section from the cat to the rear join.
What's a muffler shop going to charge for a cut, replace and weld job?
Price on a new one?

when mine rusted out it was $80 to replace with a hot dog. if you have just got a standard exhaust best bet would be the wreckers

Will do. I imagine all 3rd gen wagons are the same? I have a TL base model. Rear muffler and front pipe/cat con look fine.

The TL and TW units are different to the TH and TJ, 120mm longer due to a longer car. The TE and TF also are 120mm longer than the TH and J BUT have smaller pipe size and the rear flange is also smaller.
I often weld in hotdog, does not really change the note at all and is far cheaper plus the pipe work is usually still fine

Thanks for that.
I doubt that the local wreckers have a TL or TW wagon, looks like it will have to be a hot dog weld job.

UPDATE:
Went to the local car repair bloke and asked him to do the cut and weld bit, but he said the pipes would be knackered too. He offered to replace the middle section for $210, so I told him to go ahead. I saw the old part off the car, and the pipes looked ok, but still.
One week later my TJ started to make the same noise, so I replaced the middle section for $179, Redback part, but noise was still there. Walker muffler went on the back next, same price, now quiet as original. The pipes were the problem this time, rust holes and split joints in several places. Easy enough job to do at home, don't know why I didn't tackle the TL one myself. Getting lazy perhaps?

Wish is had known this the night I swapped my entire exhaust out from the TJ to the TL.
Man, what an effort that was one handed. Thought I had it licked until I discovered different lengths. Was hoping to just do headers and rear muffler... had to do the lot as it turned out.
