View Full Version : '95 V6 Magna Executive sedan - Is auto to manual conversion viable?

So i found a brilliant deal on a 95 TR. Its a 2nd gen V6... with a stupid auto. I absolutely love manuals, and i would hate the change. I resent the entire concept of auto's. If i can somehow get a hold of a gearbox and install it, should it all go to plan?

Note: I think its a 3.5L, but cannot be certain yet. I still have to pay it off. Was only $500

I also have a '92 magna Elite, 4 cyl, which me and dad converted to manual, fully working with cruise. The ECU is good, and can maybe be used if needed. Gear stick will bolt straight on, as well as the clutch. Both cars have nearly identical bodies. Unfortunately that gearbox is obviously useless here.

The gearbox will be the dealbreaker

If i can both put a manual in this thing, and go to all the effort of putting the best of my 4 cyl elite into the V6 Exec, i will have my dream car.

It is a 12 valve 3.0L engine, not related to the third gen 24 valve 3.0L or 3.5L engines.
(And before you ask, no, you can't swap a third gen engine and manual gearbox into the TR.)

Gearbox - depends if you can find one - you will need the V6 manual ECU, drive shafts, flywheel, clutch, pedal box, and a few other things like hydraulic cylinder, lines, etc. Plenty of them at the wreckers, but a manual may be hard to find.

Seeing you hate auto boxes S_O_O_O_O_O much, I'd source the conversion parts before buying the car.

I've had both a 2.6L manual TS sedan and V6 auto TS wagon, both OK in their own way. I wouldn't bother converting a V6 TR (getting close to 20 years old now) to manual unless the car is low km, in excellent condition, and was planning to keep it for 10 years. Engine is probably due for a refresh too. If you count the all up cost (car + gearbox + engine refresh + lots of your labour), you are well into the third gen manual territory - hence what you plan is not done very often.

Have fun whatever you do!

As for the "is it possible?" question, well, that's up to you really. lol

Ive done this...

I Agree with what madmax says with the exception of the ecu. If you bridge the inhibitor switch the car will start. Does it have cruise control? If so things can be a bit tricky... I had a TS V6 SE Auto that I converted to manual. Kept the auto computer. And got the cruise control working. Its been running great ever since. 350,000km now...

Mind you i did mine back in 08 and it is still going strong since.

there's a thread here on the forums about the work I did. I will need to dig for it though.
But basically if you are planing on keeping the car and its in good shape. I would do the conversion again. Its well worth it... Even better on 98 fuel!! :)

Thanks for all the advice! Since this other car is in such good condition, i might eventually do the conversion. I'm keeping the car as long as it lasts. It's done 246,000, and runs well.

Ive started to accept the auto. It's not so bad now I've been driving it a while.
