View Full Version : slight transmission whine - auto transmission additives any good?
after spending 45 minutes on old threads i still dont have a clear idea on this.
my TJ 2000 135k kms, has a slight transmission whine when i drive, shifting between gears isnt bad,
but it doesnt feel perfectly smooth.
last inspection under the car, i was told that the transmission box has had some sort of job done in it, we do not know what.. but there is a very slight fluid leak here and there that doesnt pose a problem yet.
i do not know what fluid was used before, and what fluid the mech used in last service (still new with all these things)
just wondering the fluid additives claim to improve lubrication, reduce noise, extend bla bla
any truth?
has anyone used these fluids and experienced quieter tranny?
thank you

I would be curious what others think as well as I have just bought some transmission flush and was in 2 minds as to whether to use it or not, will it help or harm.

Not sure whether the thread link helped. Gear changes seems smooth enough. Just developed a bit of a whine when generally first starting off and accelerating. Have bought the nulon auto transmission treatment as I thought I had read somewhere that this might help with the whine.

I'd be more concerned whether or not the additive has PTFE (Teflon) in it. Some fluids are compatible with it, some aren't. I don't think I've read anything definitive saying SP-III is compatible.
I'd be more inclined to do a flush without the aid of additives and re-assess at that point, if a flush hasn't been done recently.

my complaint is quite similar, but i also hear this when cruising on motorway.
probably some people wouldnt even notice or consider as a problem.. but i feel its not supposed to be doing it especially at 135k kms..
input from more people whether or not they have this maybe some help.
do you have a good knowledge of the service history of your car? whether proper and same fluid had always been used?
would mixing up different fluids cause this whine? (i guess often happens when cars change hand not knowing what was in there before )
common sense advises me that probably additives isnt necessary if the fluid is all proper and all that.. but how about if its not? could it be a bandaid alternative to expensive flushing...

I've had this car for about 6 months. Not sure what was used previously. Informed that regular servicing had been done. Nothing until now to suggest otherwise. Coincidentally this whine has started recently and I have also put new tyres on recently which according to another thread on here this can sometimes be the cause of a whine sound. The car had turanza er30 on it when I bought it and they seemed smooth and quiet. I was going to get these again but was told not many around. Decided on turanza serenity plus and not overly happy with them. They seem a hard compound and more noise and bumpier than previous tyres. May have something to do with the whine. Who knows??

so are you considering a fluid flush? if so, you can use the additive first to see if does any good at all ( assuming short time trial of an additive wouldnt leave unflushable crap in the tranny)

my 4sp. auto had a shudder that wasn't fixed by a trans service and oil change, was made much better with the Nulon additive and completely fixed with Shudda-fix, so some additives are clearly OK.
