View Full Version : Converting an Executive to an Elite

After going from a '91 Elite to a '94 Exec, i never quite liked it as much as The Elite. So to keep the V6 and have luxury features, i just had to convert it.

Here are the main steps. I may post more detail later on.

* Strip interior including wiring loom and headliner
* remove resistor in cabin air fan (4 pin, looks like a white ceramic rectangle on the inside). This will be replaced with a power transistor
- Looking from the donor Elite, find the 2 wire temperature sensor to the left of the resistor. In the Executive, there is no hole for this. It must be cut or drilled.
If you want your old headliner, make sure you are good at cutting holes. They must be exactly like the Elite headliner, because any mistakes are very visible.
* Hole must be drilled in the body, to the left of the boot for the automatic aerial. Then there is the issue of the old aerial.
* Cars with seat belt adjusters cannot be downgraded, there is no thread in the hole like in the '91s. This means you either have to use the plastic garnish or cut a rounded rectangle hole in the Elite garnish to match the interior.
* Remember to change the handbrake lever, if it is a different color.
* Key barrels can all be changed easily enough, but for the doors i recommend switching them over. The bottom of the doors will have grey on them, and you should either color those white or color the lower body grey (depending on vehicle color).

If you are putting this in a V6, be prepared. you must alter wires in the fuse box. This is not an easy task, and extra wires must be run in the engine bay and under the front right guard (up in the tyre well)..
This can be achieved with electrical knowledge and by looking at both fuse boxes. Take note that the only thing that failed to work for me was the hazard lights, for some reason the red-white wire isn't getting power and it's probably in the fuse box somewhere. That wire is easily confused with horn wires.
The extra horns for the alarm, and the immobilizer relay can also be added, as well as cruise control but it is a bit of a retrofit. Unless you take the engine bay harness out, wires will have to be covered with conduit and/or tape, then they need a spot to sit.
I could only get one screw to hold the cruise throttle cable on the intake manifold.

Make sure you run the 4 cruise control wires through the left hole in the firewall, before putting the car back together :/

Then reassemble everything with the Elite parts. Remember to install electronic air control servos, rear passenger air ducts (and lower adapter), ect.

Aside from the engine bay connectors, the harnesses just plug straight in.

I will gladly provide extra detail, i'm sure anyone trying this would like to hear from someone who has done it before.

thats awesome, ive wanted to try putting speakers in the back doors. Where did you put the air con controls if you put your head unit there?

if ya got both cars just swap the entire harness over. Big job but doable and you have all the goodies in the car and all connections and everything right there no rewiring needed. Plug and play. Done it on a couple worth the trouble. Goodluck vee

Aah, i'm so glad to hear that! I wasn't looking forward to wiring up the power windows. Its good to hear its doable. My dad had me convinced that because of how the car is manufactured by machine, things like the dash weren't designed to come out by hand.
Thanks for your help.

leave the elite intact and find a cheap verada for the conversion . im not sure how you will go with the 4cly 6cly front loom for the ETACS.
i have a v6 manual conversion here if your chasing one

Oh. I was thinking something might not match up. I was hoping the ECU was all that mattered to make the 6cyl happy.
Definately looking to do a manual conversion some time, but not soon.
After i'm done with the elite, i'm giving it away. Its up for grabs, because it will never pass another roady without some major work. There's way too much wrong with it.

Edit: It doesn't look as nice as in my picture, which is about 2 years old. It has dints and scratches. Might make a reliable paddock bomb
Edit 2: It will not make a reliable paddock bomb. It runs on 3 cylinders and did a head gasket bad. The starter also misses 85% of the time. Still hasn't had its last run :D

Hmm in actual fact most dashboards are installed by hand still. Toured the 3 series BMW plant in Munich a few years ago and alot of the assembly is done by hand with the aid of machinery etc. Vee

Thats awesome. I'd love to see how BMW operates, surely to a higher standard than most other manufacturers.

The roady is looking good, only a few things showed up. By next week it should be ready to register. After that i can finally mod it.

You get to see quite a bit of the interior assembly here

Thanks for that link, vee. Its amazing watching cars come together like that.

I couldn't help myself, and started ripping away at the old Elite. I even drove it in the backyard all pulled apart like that, using just the boss kit to steer.

Heres the two cars. I hate to see the 4 cyl go, but its really not roadworthy. Its on the left, with the V6 beside it

if your going to change the light of elite to the new car . its easier to change boot lid then cut the hole.s

Good idea, then its gonna have the elite logo! I was thinking about it, that would save me from changing over the electric opener. But then id have a different lock, and the paint isnt as good.
What holes need to be cut, like for wiring, or something else?

the carnish lights need hole,s to fit a stanard boot lid

oh. Damn. Ill have to change the boots over. Theres probably gonna be a few other places without holes. I should just get a V6 Elite!
Ill have to put up with it though. A police officer once told me "sometimes in life you've just gotta suck it up" after being fined for wearing a seat belt.

Thanks for the advice. This is just the encouragement i need to get my favourite car back :)

Yea, your right about that! I used cut and polish, then turtle wax color cure. Just spending a good hour on it really makes a difference. It shines.

What type of car do you have?

thats interesting. Do you like the first gens for their looks, or something else?

I have successfully put the elite taillight garnish in the V6 boot. It didn't fit perfectly, because the bolt holes are slightly different and it doesn't sit flush with the boot. But it still looks good anyway.
The electric boot opener switch is very easy to put in an executive. The wiring is the problem. I havn't tried putting the solenoid in yet.

The map lights come out really easily, and because the mounts come off, the headliner might not need to move. It might be as simple as cutting holes in the headliner.

Progress

Electronic climate control:
I have taken out the electronics (servos, Air ECU, relays, sensors). It turns out, the Executive setup is already made to take the Elite electrics. You do not have to drain the radiator, or release your air con gas. That's because you get to keep the blower, heater and conditioner you already have.

Electric aerial: Installed, without wiring. It was very hard to drill the hole. Not because of physics, but because i was holding a sharp power tool against my cars body.

Rear feet air ducts: Surprisingly, these just went straight in. With a little fiddling around, i did it without taking the dash off. All you need is an Elite air duct 'adapter', that fits on the bottom of the main air blower. As well as the actual feet air ducts.

I've started on the electric windows. Drivers side is in, and most of the wiring is in position. I'm just not sure how i'm going to power them, if i should just have them work when the key is in or add a switch. I like the ETACS system (with 30 sec delay for windows), but there's just so much wire to follow, and hook up.

Edit: I also made sure i got the Elite badge. This will go on last, when it truly is an Elite (not verada, since i'm using '91 parts).
