When changing a tie rod end I found a torn rack boot. My manual (Gregory's) is a bit cryptic- "Note- Due to the difficulty involved in working beneath the vehicle when removing and installing the inner clips on the rubber boots it is recommended that the steering gear be removed when renewing the rubber boots". Then it tells you how to do it.
Had a look and it doesn't seem so bad (left one) and I plan to slide the boot over the tierod, replace the rodend and wheel and then drive the car onto ramps to give me some room to put the boot onto the rack.
Am I setting myself up for a fall?
Also, should there be oil in the rack? If not, what lubricates it?

Pressure side of the rack is lubricated by the power steering fluid.
The rack itself has grease in it. (IIRC)
No lubricant should be leaking out when you redo the boots. They are there to keep dirt out, not oil in.
I've done TS steering rack boots and tie rods, without taking the rack out. Do-able, but don't ask me for details. Don't remember, it was a long time ago.
Count the number of turns needed to take the rod end off, use that when reinstalling to avoid needing a wheel alignment.
If you have trouble getting the boot end to stretch on, soak the end in hot water first, dry, install. Needs a bit of a stretch.
If the supplied ties are difficult to install, use plastic ties instead. Nice and tight, then cut excess off the plastic tie end.
Worthwhile checking the tie rods themselves, if dirt has been getting in for a while, the ball joints where the tie rods join the rack will show play. Need to be replaced, not much clearance to get to the locking washer. Definitely get a wheel alignment if you replace the tie rods.

I've done heaps . put the side your doing in full lock (tie rod at its shortest point) the left hand side you will need to remove the k frame brace to get your hands in to the rack . some boots slip on easy and some are tight and a pita to do
