Hi guys,
I am currently using Magnatec 10W-40 semi-synthetic oil in my 380 VRX 2005 and it's not too bad.
I was wondering if Penrite 10W-40 semi-synthetic oil is any better as I've read some of the articles in this forum and most people reckon it's really good oil but the question is if it's any better than the Magnatec.
They're both around $38 rrp.
Cheers.

Repco is selling HPR10 fully synthetic for $48.
That is what Madmagna recommended too

why such a thick oil, i thought these newer cars have much tighter tolerances than older ones
10w-40 is what i would put in a high km 95' falcon
someone correct me if im wrong here?

I'd say Penrite.
I can’t remember exactly which Penrite oil I used in my 380 but it seems much better than the Valvoline oil which was put in by the dealer when I first bought it.
I had a persistent cold engine rattle but when I changed the oil and replaced it with some quality Penrite stuff the rattle went away.

Theres a thread in the AWD forum that may help. We chat about Magnatec and Penrite there.
I guess it would apply to the 380 as well.

Thank you for letting me know as I didn't know that Penrite make a fully synthetic oil @ 10W-50, should be way better than the magnatec I have in it now.
I'll be changing the oil sometime over the next few weeks and will let you know how much better the Penrite is; great value too as it's only $10 more than the magnatec.
All I knew is that Mobil 1 have a fully synthetic oil but its 5W-30 which I believe is a way too thin oil for the 380. (my father put it in his 2008 aurion 2yrs ago and one morning after he just started it, the engine made a huge banging noise so he changed it back to 10W and it's been fine since then)

"Newer" means current crop of cars, 380s need not apply. lol What grades does the owner's handbook recommend?
20W-50 worked fine in the 2.6L engines, 15w-40 seems ok for the third gens.
HPR10 (10W-50) sounds about right for the 380.
Currently $48.50 at Supercheap. Actually, that's an old price. lol

the handbook just shows about 10 different weights covering all basically the same climate with some going to the extreme of hot & cold. 5W-30 seems to be the on the mark of what we realistcally see here
the rest work well in -20ºC mornings and 50ºC heatwaves lol

I've been using Castrol Magnatec in my 05 VRX as I use to use it in my previous S1 TJ VRX but I have noticed white smoke and engine noise on start up until it warms up so will be changing for full syn Penrite HPR 10 as I use Penrite in the trans and brake fluid I'm very happy with it so far, plus its not much difference in price as stated in other posts.

Cycles. The world goes around in cycles.
Or perhaps there is just too much choice in oil brands and grades?
Actually, I think it is because people love their cars and want to take the best care of them.

You're spot on, it's because people love their 380's and want to take the best care of them so they last a long time trouble free.
I actually worry at times as I won't be able to get a similar car as nice & cheap in the future with great sound (both exhaust & engine) & performance.

Went from 10w-40 Valvoline Durablend to 5W-30 Nulon Semi Synthetic and lifter noise when cold has dissapeared.

It's good to see that that your lifter noise when cold has disappeared since you used a better oil.
I also have a slight lifter noise when the engine is cold so I'm hoping it goes after I put in the Penrite full synthetic oil in the next week or two.

I too just recently went from a 10 - 40 to a 5 - 30 and a change of brand and got a similar result.
I won't mention brands so as to avoid a bunfight but certainly a quiter motor on start up.

I thought I had lifter noise as well when cold, but have been advised by Mitsubishi that its piston slap. My noise occurs under load. Could this be the same with everyone else who is experiencing the noise from cold.
My car is running Magnatec 10-40. Will try a different oil but a little confused as to what to try. Do i need to go thicker? Like Mitsu Miyagi said they went from 10w-40 to Nulon 5W-30. Is this thinner oil?

Using anything but magnatec should fix the problem. #shitoil

5W-30 is thinner than 10W-40 at the colder temp range. Im sure theres a better way to explain it but just go get some of the stuff i posted. Nulon arent shit, they make quality stuff.

I didn't think the 380s suffered from piston slap, it is the aurions that have this problem and my fathers aurion will make the very slight lifter noise always (piston slap), even when it's hot where's my 380 VRX is quiet once warmed up.
My mechanic advised me that the 5W-30 is great for winter conditions but in summer it's too thin and would not suit.
If I were you I'd use 10W-40 as per the user manual but get the fully synthetic oil available in many brands such as the Penrite brand, around $48. (I just bought the Penrite full synthetic oil and will try it shortly and post results; have been using Magnatec which I found quite average)

wow, it hits 50 deg where you live? Must be a horrible summer
get the fully synthetic oil available in many brands
fully synthetic means fully awesome right?

[QUOTE=Mitsu Miyagi;1584292]interesting, could you point out which page it mentions this?
It's written in the Mitsubishi manual under the oil specification section (10W-40) and it doesn't mention 50 mainly because it's too thick when the engine oil is hot in 20-25deg outside temp (40 is a lot more suitable according to my mechanic & mitsubishi)
My mechanic advised me that the 5W-30 is great for winter conditions but in summer it's too thin and would not suit in 28 to 35deg, approx. 20% of Melbournes summer.

section 8-6 of the owners manual is the only place i can find any mention of oil viscosity and even then it only shows a graph of a bunch of different weights and which ones cover what temps.
5W-30 has the same thickness as 10W-40 until 35 degree ambient temp, yet works a treat on cold start ups.. I know which one id be recommending.
Possibly you could try both and see yourself, instead of recommending what your mechanic recommends. Funnily enough i got thinking about 5W-30 after mitsubishi told me it would clear up cold starting ticking......

I think you guys are paying too much attention to your numbers. 5-30 10-40 its hardly a huge difference. Your engine will run fine on both. If it is noisier on one to another its your choice

Please allow me to explain, I'm not after an argument; like you've stated, the 5W figure is great for our cars when cold, nice and thin, perfect for those cold mornings but the 30 is just too thin in Summer conditions above 30deg; these are the facts not because I say so but because they're true.
Anyhow, like HaydenVRX says, lets not pay too much attention to these numbers; it's actually the quality of the oil that counts at the end of the day.

My car has ticking but only once warmed up.
I am not sure but I think it only started once I used HPR10 10w50 oil.
Could that be the cause of the ticking?

lol now 5W-30 is only good until 30 degrees?
I better call Suabru Australia and ask them to explain their 5W-30 oil recommendation in our liberty's handbook.
im not arguing, im just trying work out why you said to buy fully synthetic penrite.

That's fine, early on in this thread I was recommended Penrite fully synthetic oil by others members as I wanted something better than Magnatec semi-synthetic in my 380 VRX.

Yeah you're right, it's shit but I didn't realise it's crap till I read this forum.
Mitsubishi in Burwood, VIC said to me a few years ago that they use it in their services and it's good oil, but I guess they must've been referring to value for money. (I think at the time it was only around $26 wheres now it's gone up to $38)

That's true, but I did think Magnatec was a decent oil and quite cheap until now so I've gone out and bought Penrite fully synthetic oil for $48 which will going into my 380 VRX shortly. (want to take care of my 380 so its lasts a while and I also want the beast to perform its best) lol

I just switched from Valvoline Engine Armour 10w40 to Penrite 10w50 as my 380 seemed to be using a little more of the former than I would have liked. Glad I did, the engine is quiet as a mouse at start up, even though it is the same viscosity when cold, and doesn't appear to have burned anything in 4000 kays so far. Well worth the extra $10 or so.
For those of you who love your Magnatec, Repco are selling it for 45% off this Saturday only, I guess if your not watching the Election coverage you can always change the oil in your car....lol.

I finally changed the oil in my 380 VRX last week and the Penrite full synthetic oil seems to be a little better so far, I'd say the engine is at least 20-30% quieter when cold which I'm very pleased with as I do many short trips. lol
