View Full Version : KJ blackout cluster into TE - fuel gauge problems.

Hi there folks,

Quick introduction as I'm new- I'm Leon. In the past I've owned a TR, but have recently rejoined the Magna owners club after purchasing a TE wagon (I'm a semi-pro musician and carting my guitar rig and guitars around in a wagon is much better than in my Ford Transit).

Anyway, I have an issue with my blackout cluster. I'm not sure if it's a series one or two- I assume two as it required a rewire of the plug, as well as the two plug-ins at the back of the dash (you know the ones- one has a grey surround and one has a yellow surround... sorry, I'm not sure how else to describe it). Anyway, I have everything working as should, except for the the trip a/ trip b thing, which for me isn't a big deal anyway- they both clock my travel, but reset everytime I turn off the engine. The bigger problem lies in that I can't wire up my fuel gauge properly.

I have an Ellery workshop manual and both the wiring schem's for the TE and the TJ/KJ specify that the fuel sender wire is a grey one. I've located the wire, but the replacement dash plug that I pulled from a KJ doesn't have a grey wire stemming from it

Now, at all costs I wanted to avoid installing a trip computer, but is that what I would need to fix the problem? And if so... well, they're not exactly readily available, are they? Like I said- I don't really care about the trip a/trip b thing not working... my biggest concern is not knowing how much fuel left I have in my tank!

Any info or help would be greatly appreciated ladies and gents :)

Can be done without the trip. I did it in my TF with a s1 dash. I used the proper loom though.

I then tried fitting a trip computer, i managed. But had issues with DTE and my guage. Have a feeling i cut the yellow and green wire.

DTE still doesnt work but oh well

Ah ok... I did come across a thread about someone putting a Verada trip computer into their Sports, and having to cut the yellow w/ green trace wire and patching into the grey wire (fuel sender signal according to my TE and TJ wiring manuals).

Seems to be what I need to do is something similar... just not sure what, exactly :/

What loom, trip comp and cluster. If has 2 hard mounted plugs then is series 1 cluster but trip comp and loom needs to match

I had to change the loom when I put the new cluster in- the existing plug didn't fit into the new cluster.

I took out the old hard mounted plugs at the rear and put in ones removed from a KJ. Everything works as should on the cluster- indicators, handbrake light, high beam light etc... but for one of the hard mounted plugs at the rear there is the fuel sender wire (grey) and nothing to attach to... if that makes sense.

Sorry that does not make sense at all plus it is not possible to answer your issue unless you are able to answer my question

Sorry Madmagna, I didn't mean to come across as ambiguous.

In a similar fashion to that of the thread I found re: putting a Verada trip computer into a Magna Sports and having the fuel gauge drop out (solving of the issue being the cutting of the green wire w/ yellow trace and patching into the grey wire [fuel sender unit signal wire]), I took the green/yellow wire left from the wiring harness plug I patched into my existing loom and simply wired it into the grey signal wire for the fuel sender unit (therein 'bypassing' the trip computer [which I don't have- atypical 'speed alarm' feature only] and running straight onto the fuel sender unit), and presto- fuel gauge has come to life and is fully operational.

Again, sorry for any confusion, and thank you greatly for your attempts at trying to make sense of my gibberish and offer some guidance to resolve my issue- it's greatly appreciated.

Sorry still confused as hell as I can not fathom why you would need to be cutting wiring etc if the loom was from the same car that the cluster and centre display came from. Is the centre display from the same car
