$50 reward for correct diagnosis..

KJ Verada GTV - 195,000 Service light has come on and bang, a bag of dramas. Probably coincidence but anyway here are the dramas. I accelerated hard on the way home and noticed, for the first time, a severe shudder/shake coming from the left front of the car (was going around a left hand bend). I immediately went home and checked my wheels etc to make sure they were still hanging on properly, all good! Next, report the dramas to my old man, ex mechanic, but not during the computer era! He advised ignition problems so we went about changing the plugs and leads seems as though they were due for service anyway. We changed the plugs and leads put it all together and went for a test drive. What a pig, no acceleration, shudder still there, take the engine over 3k rpm and the TCL light comes on and starts flashing. The TCL continues to flash until the engine is turned off and then back on again.

We check leads to dizzy- connections and order, all good...the car idles great no miss or burbles. It revs great all the way through to 6k when in park or nuetral. I have been driving to work for 1 week like this and the car drives ok, with shudder, so long as i do not push the car, or the TCL light will come on etc...Car would do the 1/4 mile in around 2 weeks!

Some trouble shooting done has been : Check distributor, leads, plugs seatings and gaps, all connections that were disconnected during removal of plenum. Cruise control works fine.

I am thinking that possible the CV/Drive shaft (18 months old only, purchased from Mits Fix)for the shuddering and maybe a Throttle sensor, air flow, vacuum solenoid but really have no idea.

Anybody have ideas? Anybody have a MUTII diagnosis scanner?

Cheers.

Check the MAF plug is ok. Clean and plugged in, that is.

Replace the ignition coil. About $60 from eBay.

You don't need a scanner, a paperclip will do.

And tell your dad i sympathise, but the days of "It's misfiring so I better change the plugs, check the leads and distributor" are long gone.
Get him to come on this forum if he is so inclined, and we will get him up to speed. lol

EDIT: the ECU error codes will show up a lot of problems, but there are a couple that don't show - like collapsed cat, air leaks, failing ignition coil. BUT it is a good place to start, as it rules out a lot of stuff, like the cam and crank angle sensors, gearbox speed sensors, etc.
I'd start there.
Let us know what happens if you do. The check engine light, transmission N light, and TCL lights can all flash codes to indicate problems.

Id say its your gearbox mate (if its automatic). Ptomlems only happen when its changing gear or in gear)

Could be the wheel bearing? or the tyre has a bulge,
my car had a vibration so i changed the cv shaft and wheel bearing with no results and then took the tyres off and put others on its all good now
