Hi,
I notice some rattling in the interior of my KJ2.
I hear it coming from the drivers side door, glovebox (possibly) center console where either the stereo is or the vents, and somewhere in the rear.
Any known spots that cause rattling?
And any advice to fix these? I can imagine getting sponge tape and putting it everywhere should help but I wouldn't want it to show

I have the glove box rattle and the center console rattle on certain roads. The glove box though is driving me crazy. I bought a roll of this "tape" that is like fabric? I've forgotten the exact name, but I bought a big sheet of the same stuff - its used for this sort of work. I've had them in the workshop for about three months now... still haven't gotten around to using them in an attempt to silence the rattles.
Would like to think THIS is the weekend I get to it, but...
IF I do get around to it I'll post pics and such.

My parcel shelf or something else in that vicinity is rattling a fair bit as well, day to day. It's dynamatted which stops bass rattle but seemingly hasn't affected road rattle from the back. It sounds almost like it's coming from the C pillars but I can't find any source there either. Suggestions EXTREMELY welcome.

There a 3 nuts that hold the grille for the rear speakers in place, there is also a small metal clip, put some foam on both sides of that clip. Foam weatherstrip tape from bunnings works.

Nice. I will definitely be checking this option out soon, cheers.

I put some filler in behind my car pillars. And wrapped the wiring plugs for the map lights.
Clark rubber has some things Grey foam I cut into straps and pushed in between the console surround for the stereo.
All o the her power packs and other boxes were wrapped and made rate free.
All at storage surfaces are carpet covered.
Stuffing was placed in the back pillar to stop the rattle there.
And I use sound deadening like glue tak for any thing else.
She's nice and tight now.

Pretty Good...
Pretty much hammer it and there nought but a squeak...There is a rattle in the console over the big bumps, or clutch shudder from low revs....
Biggest gripe I have is people working on the interior and not reassembling properly.. This pleasure is reserved for mcs_xi and myself..
Are you running audio...
Rattle and such costs me points in SQ comps, so I try and keep her pretty tight....

Not running any audio system in there now but planning to.
Though the rattles just annoy me. They aren't too bad but they are there and I think it shouldn't be too hard to get rid of them.
Just need to find the right stuff for the job I think.
For those who have subwoofers they can likely get a bass test CD and isolate rattles that way

A slow sine sweep will help you find them all just about. Pm me and I'll send you one when the time comes.

Is it a single track with sine sweep or individual tracks for each frequency?

A sweep is one track.

I had a rattle coming from the C-Pillar a few months back. Turned out is was the plastic bit that comes with the belt that attaches to the C-Pillar. It was a little loose.
Could also be one of those Christmas tree clips not clipping in or the plug of the courtesy lights bashing against the pillar

Gotta love rattles, my trunk is horrid. +1 on the sweep, it really does help. I put some really small foam on my sunroof plastic, that was one place. Then the rear view mirror on mine rattles, still can't fix it either. Bass vibrates the winshield. Now the back, I heard if you put foam between where the back dash meets the metal, it helps. I can't remember exactly where, I know it's posted somewhere here. I'll edit if I can find it.

Some good points, if you know anyone with a basic system (removable box) ask if they can throw their woofers in your car with some good length of speaker wire running from their amp. May look funny but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. I can't stand rattles, and I still deal with every single one of them :P

My mirror has an annoying rattle. Mostly in the morning when the engine revs higher, I tend to hold the bloody thing until I take off.
Tried a rubber band around the ball joint but that did nought.
Ideas?
My solution. I no longer look in the rear vision mirror. lol
But I have squeak in the rear seat somewhere, and I believe it sounds like the leather rubbing on something...Grrr.

is there a diy for tj mirror removal??
mine does this and i am getting a new one to fix it
I had an annoying rattle from the glove box, centre console area - turned out to be the mirror. :)
It's where it mounts to the windshield that makes the most noise. My initial fix was simply to push the mirror up as high as it can go, that eliminated most of the rattle.
Next thing I've done is wedge a roll of paper between the windshield and the top/front edge of the mirror mount. Now the mirror shakes with music but doesn't actually rattle or produce any noise of it's own.
If I used black paper or cardboard or even a plastic wedge, it would be invisible.

My TJII Sports has an annoying rattle of the central interior light. It's right next to my left ear....highly annoying. Strangely (considering it's next to my ear) it took me a couple of weeks and a passengers help to track it down.
Any suggestions how to make it quiet?

Despite the mileage my car is pretty much free of interior rattles / buzzes / squeaks. I can hear a thump from the boot over certain bumps but I suspect that's just from the suspension.
Centre interior light - had the same problem and a tiny bit of blue tack discreetly placed where the clear cover clips to the light fixed the buzzing.
Mirror - replaced it with one that screws onto the mount.
Dashboard - had some buzzes around the ignition barrel on course chip roads so packed it with folded up dried baby wipes. The floor vent outlets also buzzed so glued them to something nearby that didn't move with construction adhesive.
Door trims - lined with Dynamat xtreme and if you've removed your door trims too many times, I'd recommend getting new clips from a wreck. Also added the additional rubber sealing from the Xi Verada which makes the doors close up harder against the trims.
Parcel shelf - lined with Dyamat xtreme.
Pillars - lined them with aluminium / tar flashing from Bunnings and they're now covered in two layers of material.
Boot - the body of the aerial where it's mounted moved around a little so I placed strips of the flashing to hold it in place. Taped up some of the loose wires around that area with duct tape. Also made sure that the spare tyre and tools were fixed securely.

Billy, what do you mean about the rubber seals from the Xi? Are they different to the lower range 3rd gen?

Hi Spetz, yes there's an additional soft rubber seal glued to the existing seal at door level that you don't find in the lower models.

What do they offer, a more silent cabin?

My parcel shelf used to rattle from bass, fixed by opening the boot and stuffing a folded sponge through one of the holes at the back so it sits between the parcel shelf and the metal. Rear view mirror used to rattle from bass too, fixed by installing a chromatic mirror :D

Yep, pretty much. Aside from the front doors requiring more effort to close properly, the car does feel a little more refined or solid but it could be all in my mind.

Billy, do these just clip in?
Are they easily removed from the Xi?

Glued on to the main seal.

Yep, just glued on. Super glue worked best but make sure you test fit as the seals are front / rear door and left / right side specific.

Does anyone have any idea of how much these would be new from Mitsubishi?
...or is the wrecker the only real option?
FYI I priced the rear 23mm sway bar bushes at Mitsubishi yesterday for my TJII Sports. I nearly fell over when the parts interpreter told me the price. I had to ask him to repeat it.
They were $3.07 each I was truly shocked!
Strangely enough the front 22mm ones were $27 each. Go figure...

No idea on the new price but I'd be concerned that Mitsu will sell the entire door seal (original plus the additional seal that we're talking about here) which will probably cost a fortune whereas you can simply remove the additional seals from a wreck. In fact most of them were coming away from the original seal and some were even on the cabin floor when I got mine as they're appeared to be just glued on (not very well). I think I paid about $20 or something for all 8.
