Hi guys,
Over the last few weeks my boot has got to the stage where it cant stay open. Assuming the struts need to be replaced or re-gased. Just wondering if it is worth re-gasing the boot struts or to just replace them all together. Does anyone know if you need specific mits struts or if there are aftermarket ones that work fine? Also, how much it would be to get the original ones re-gased?
Cheers, Belzawagon

There is a guy that sells them and/or regasses struts for around 60-70$. I think the number I have is the local guy, otherwise he will forward you to the appropriate person. Richard on 0417567182

Pretty sure you would just buy new ones.
I think even stores like Supercheap auto stock them (not too sure on this though)

enter magna wagon tailgate struts into eBay search ... they're under $30.

Yep. I bought a set for my TS wagon. Not enough gas pressure in them either. If you buy from eBay, fit them and test them before you give feedback.

Repco sells Monroe Gas Struts for the boot and bonnet for around $20-$30 each and they work great, got some for the bonnet on my TJ Magna when I first got it.

Nope, they were for the tailgate of a TS wagon many years ago. I should have put in an "item not as described" claim with paypal and gotten my money back, but instead I put up with them. They still allowed the tailgate to come down on my head in winter, but not summer.
I don't have the car anymore. The original struts on my TL tailgate are great, the lid springs up by itself and needs a hefty pull downwards to close. Much better. lol

yeah it only happens when cold. But its a pain when the door hits your head lol
At the wreckers they are $14 each. Maybe that could be the best bet, stick with genuine.

Though what will make ones of the same age last so much longer than yours have? Id personally go with cheapie aftermarket in this case... Though I think Mal would have the most telling answer.

Only reason i'm not sold on the aftermarket replacements is that i have heard average results from a few people. If anyone has recently picked up a set of aftermarket ones, I would appreciate a report on how they perform :)

Rumpfy, i assume your happy with them? Did you have the problem where the struts failed in the cold?

Hiya Belza,
yeah mate. The struts gradually lose gas and the pressure falls. The first you notice this is on a cold day when the pressure is lowest.
The new struts n the land cruiser are great; Aussie based companies can deliver the goods; even if the goods are made in Asia. Struts Aust have a recognised QA system and no-one should have anything to fear from buying locally. If there is a problem, just go back to the supplier. With all the other ways of purchasing, its a bit hard to re-export and reclaim the money. I find that once I've paid the money and got something that works the way it's supposed to work, then I forget about how much money I paid; I go on to the next problem.
With the magna, there is a special bracket used on the bulkhead end and you need to give your original strut back to Struts, and they (presumably), reuse the end bracket.
The magna strut is in their catalog and I'm sure they will quote you over the phone.
