Hi guys,
Can someone tell me whether the Xi steering remote can change which CD is playing?
I have a Kenwood USB MP3 player and just bought the Xi steering remote.
I am wondering what controls I will have besides changing source, volume and track number
Last I heard was that you can't simply use the Xi steering wheel audio controls with aftermarket head units.

from memory, yes. there is a chg button which will cycle through the discs.

Yes I know I need an interface box.
Will the PAC SW-X do the job?
I would like to be able to control volume, track, source as well as go through the folders and accepting/declining a call would be nice too

Some research into the PAC system would tell you that it is a learning interface. Meaning, it isn't plug and play, and you will have to program it. You have 6 buttons. This means 6 functions. You can program any of the 6 buttons to do any function.
When the remote was combined with the OEM HU, the buttons did various things depending on which mode the Head Unit was in. That won't be possible with an aftermarket system.

Yes I read the manuals for the Pac systems but I wasn't sure whether holding a button or pressing two at the same time would yield an extra function or not?
Also since my Kenwood HU has a wired remote input, does this mean I need the SWI-JACK?

Yep. Swi-Jack would be better.
It is programmed the same.

What about pressing two buttons at the same time, or holding a button, do they yield different functions?
eg, holding the "next track" button, could this be programmed to forward to the next folder on the USB drive?

That depends on the PAC system. But I really don't think so. You have to ask them,

Would it depend on the Pac system or the Xi remote? Whether it sends a different signal that the Pac system can register if two buttons are pressed simultaneously or if held?
I assume the holding part should work, since I assume with the OEM head unit holding the next button fast forwards the track?

Since it uses resistance based signalling, and learning, no. And it will depend on the PAC system The remote sends the same signal if held or pressed. The HU deciphers it.
But you are welcome to try it.

I'm not entirely sure how the PAC system works, but from what I understand the signal that is sent to the HU is pre-programmed, and during the learning procedure it records the and corresponds the signals to know how to translate them.
And since the PAC system has a "next CD" command, would it not just depend on the Xi remote whether it has a next CD button?

Yes I see I have an option of 9 different functions.
I can program any button of the Xi remote to any function.
BTW, I have the remote plug that went into the the OEM head unit. Does this mean I do not need to run the signal wire to the PAC? Just install the remote and the clock spring and plug it all up?

Yes. Check under the steering column where the airbag connection is for the steering wheel. If there is a plug there that is empty (2 pins) then you have the wire that runs through the dash harness. Then install the PAC thing behind the Head unit and plug in the steering wheel remote.

Which one of the two wires do I use for the remote signal as I notice the OEM plug has 2?
And what does the second wire do?
the blue one is phone mute.

How does it work exactly? You press a button to mute or is it to use with some additional bluetooth device?
My head unit has a mute wire in which from reading the manual says it is to come from a GPS
I think that mute wire goes to under the gear selector to another plug for the phone to connect to so that if the OEM headunit receives a signal from it, it mutes the audio.
