Hi all,
Before i take my car in for a Service i would like to throw a question up about a sound i have in my engine.

If anyone has had this problem or know what it might be please give me a tingle.

My Specs: 1997' Exec. V6 3.0L

The Problem: When i start my car a 'rattle' kind of sound starts, if i leave it in park and give it some juice, the rattle gets louder until it stops (as i increase rev's). Also the sounds seems to clear after i start to roll at some speed (+20km/hr).

I'm not sure if it would be a rock on/in my stone plate. And i was wondering if anyone had, had this problem before.

Thanks a heap

Lifters ... Lifters Lifters... if the noise is a tick tick tick tick ... really fast and if it suddenly stops when the car starts to warm up, then its lifters. You can stop it by going a slightly thicker oil ... or replacing them.

If its a genuine rattle, either the exhaust heat shield ... or a tiny plate in the join (where the front and rear exhausts meet) has finally come loose.

Thanks for that,

any idea how to fix it if its the exhaust? without going to a Shop? Whats required? or how hard. I like to learn how to fix my car my self.

I will be changing my Oil, im gonna use Mobil Syth S and change the oil filter. See if that helps out a bit.

However on the same problem. the sound actually comes when i accelerate its makes the sound.

Thanks again

Dude, if u got tappet noise, u need to use perhaps something bit thicker oil than what's there now. Or perhaps the current oil is too old and has lost its properties. Remember 5000 km or 4 months, which ever comes first - this is when u really love your car and ignore the sales pitch about 10'000 km service crap etc.
If it's mechanical, like looseness in bolts what ever, it might be difficult to pin point. Take a mate with u on a ride or when car still try to listen where is it coming from exactly etc.
It's all a matter of elimination.
Good luck.

Mate i have a 98 TF and since the car was new it has had a little rattle when idleing. It is a manual so when you push the clutch in the rattle went. What it was was the thrust bearing was buggered, didn't cause any dramas just little rattle. Or could be the Tappets and you can fix with slightly thicker oil. Or just get inunder your car and check out how tight your exhausts manifold/header bolts are?? Sounds funny but i thought mine had a crack in the headers again( had fixed) but no it was the fact that eight of the bolts were done up not as tight as they should have been.
So check out all of these just to be sure.

Hi, im still pin pointing the problem i've located the source of the sound but not what it is, it is where the front extractors meet the back and merge into the main exhaust. Its just a bit high of the Catylic Converter how ever it just might be the Catylic Converter.

thanks a heap for you knowledge gentlemen.

could be another cracked flex pipe. I had this rattle once when I bottomed out my car and the front pacemakers hit the ground and it must have bent the exhaust quite a considerable amount and the flex pipe rattled when ever I gave it a booting. I changed the flex pipe and it went away but there's always going to be some noise coming out from the flex pipe.
