people who follow the threads on this forum would be aware i have a 93 TR 4 cyl manual that had "problems" when i bought it, it was running ok but i started to fix it up and kept driving it and then problems started to appear one after the other.
here's the list of faults I have repaired in this car over the last few months.
(and you thought you got a lemon! )
To seal the cooling system,
new radiator cap
new waterpump
new heater hoses
new welch plugs
new inlet manifold gasket
new head gasket and head machining
replace timing case (corrosion)
flush engine block and heater
fresh coolant
I didn't replace any gaskets without repairing an existing leak, now it holds coolant and pressure
while I had it apart I found the front, rear and firewall engine mounts were broken, yes 3 out of 4. now the engine sits where it's supposed to.
replaced a lifter and changed the oil and filter, now it doesn't tap or rattle.
It had an annoying rattle in the dash so I pulled it apart to find someone had been there before me and hadn't tightened the metal support braces behind the dash I also fixed their shoddy stereo wiring, now it's quiet and is less likely to catch on fire.
roof lining was sagged so i removed it cardboard and all. Put the fabric through the washing machine and tried to reglue it to the cardboard backing with Fuller spray bond. It had a few creases but came out ok for a $20 job, considering a new fabric done properly is $120. I can now see out the rear window.
(if u try to do this yourself, in and out through a rear door and reglue from the back to the front and try not to stretch the fabric)
I have also put 2 new tyres on this car and replaced the dash speakers
All this on an 11 year old car.
now it idles and runs smooth and goes damn hard for a TR 4cyl. It finally doesn't leak oil or coolant, but the temp gauge still sit's just over half and the damn thing is due for rego in the next few weeks. It now won't need any work to pass a pink slip. All I have to do after rego is repair and paint the crease in the rear quarter and it will be in good condition and ready to sell.
Anyone ever had a car that required more Mechanical work to make it reliable and roadworthy?
