View Full Version : Side-effects or risks in by-passing immobiliser?

If I again am unable to start my car (KJ series 1) due to the immobiliser, I am inclined to send the ECU to Mal to have it (the immobiliser) by-passed. I'm tempted to get it done to avoid a future failure to start.

Is anyone aware of any unwanted side-effects in doing this? Any risks - for example of damaging the ECU when removing? The obvious risk is that of having the car stolen & not being covered be insurance.

no risks, other than not having an immobiliser.

I guess there is a minimal risk when doing the reflash if battery voltage isn't high enough, laptop crashes, etc but it's pretty low risk imo.

I'm new to the forum. Will the bypass work for a tf? Who is Mal? I want this done

As I understand the E & F series cars used a different immobiliser setup so ECU reflashing is not a solution.

Damit..... I thought it was too good to be true

It will work if you use a TJ ECU (Provided you have an F and not an E as the E trans will not operate)

You will have your check engine light on as the bara sensor on the TJ is not present on the TF but most remove the globe and be done with it.

If you dont have Cruse in your car this can be resolved by using a TJ engine harness as well

95% sure it's a tf. I have cruise as well. So will the tj ecu just plug in after a reflash and my only problem will be cel will stay illuminated?
Do you have a tj ecu laying around madmagna and do you know what they are worth?

VIN number should tell you the model - "6MMTX............." where X is the model - Dave_Au explain it here

Yeah it's a tf. I knew about the vin number already I just have a bad memory and wanted to double check.
Anyone have a tj ecu for sale?

First check that you have the reflashing connector as it appears to have been a running change in the F series some time in 1998. The reflash connector is a small rectangular connector with 2 rows of pins located on the inside edge of the bottom of the dash between the steering column and the centre console. If you don't have that, you either need a replacement harness as Mal suggests or have the ECU reflashed elsewhere. There are different ECUs for manual and auto cars of course, as the harnesses have different connectors, but with the matching ECU the connectors were the same for the F, H & J series. If you want to learn more about reflashing, see the thread linked in my sig.

I believe I can disable the barometric pressure sensor CEL in a J series ECU, but don't have access to an F series car to test.

I have the port to reflash. I noticed it when I was playing with the immobiliser antenna the other day. It just so happens that I'm in Queanbeyan so when I get hold of a tj ecu maybe you could help me out? Or if you have a tj ecu that you want to do some testing on I don't mind u using my car as long as I can ask you stupid questions while your doing it....
It would be reassuring to see it work before I forked out cash for an ecu...

Seeing as you have a reflashable TF ECU, you can disable the imobilliser.

You just need to meet up with someone who has an openport so you can reflash. (looks in Andy's direction lol)

Sorry, took my eye off this thread. As it happens I do have a TJ auto ECU I'd sell however I've never been able to lay hands on a 6G72 TJ ECU (either auto or manual) or the ROM from such an ECU :( so only have 6G74 versions but I can copy the fuel and ignition maps from a 6G72 TH ROM I have. Due to the different auto trans calibration, reflashing your existing ECU is a better bet which I can do once I get some info from Bill (BCX7).

I'd like the opportunity to test the doctored TJ ECU even if your existing ECU reflashes okay.

Tj ecu runs fine on the tf

I have several 3.0l tj ecu's

If immob can be disabled on tf unit would be ideal however

I didn't think it was possible to reflash my ecu to bypass the immobiliser. Can the tj rom be flashed onto my ecu(if that is the correct terminology)
What is a tj ecu gonna set me back plus reflashing?

If it helps my TF is running a TJ ecu and I've run a TE with a TW ecu, both with no immob :D

Lol just saw your post. I don't know who Andy is Or Mal for that matter. Who I assume are the best people for the job?
I'd like to do something over the next few weeks assuming it doesn't cost too much. Lol

Neo, your TE was a Manual though, the TE and TF will not run a TL or TW ecu if Auto

Thanks for that bcx7. I've made contact with Andy and he's gonna hook me up. :) also realised from trawling this forum that mad magna is mal....
