Hi all.

I'm currently f%#@ed and far from home and could really use some advice. I bought a 1996 TS Magna Exec V6 manual about 9 months ago and have had a lot of issues.

First it had a stuck valve in the engine and got that fixed new head gasket and all... Then I needed a new radiator for warranty on the work. Next the slave cylinder failed and had that and the master cylinder replaced. Next I needed new front and rear suspension, and about 2 weeks after that throw bearing went and I got a clutch kit put in. I was staying the night in Sydney and the next day I had no reverse or fifth gear, had a snapped selector cable. After a giant mission to find second hand selector cables (including a fruitless mission from drummoyne to Londonderry to find out they infact didn't have the part though they told me on the phone they did :-\ ) finally a friend found some for $77 on the north coast and posted them. I returned to the mechanic in drummoyne who charged me $200 to change the cables only to tell me that i still had no reverse or fifth and that when the cable snapped it damaged something inside the gearbox and that I need a replacement. I was told that there was a transmission available from a wreckers but they couldn't even tell me what condition it is in and told me it would cost at least $1400.

I'm really at the end of my rope and I feel like this mechanic's trying to take me for a ride given the labour charge on changing the selector cables. What are my chances of finding a gearbox in good nick? Or one with a less dubious source... I have spent so much money on this car I figure I may as well fix this but I am by no means wealthy and I don't know much about car mechanics and I'm starting to freak out a bit. If anyone has any advice or knows where i I could find a replacement part it would be very much appreciated.. I'm just really not sure what to do. Thanks :-)

Well nobody has responded so I'll give it a go.
I've never rebuilt a Missus tranny but I have rebuilt Beemer, Alfa and, of course holden 3 speeds when I was a boy in the Army.

If a shift cable broke, chances are that a detent ball is wedged or a spring has broken or the tranny has locked in someway through the selectors.
The fact you are getting 1 to 4th gears points to the reverse selectors.
I would not pay $1500 for a 2nd hand tranny without removing the tranny I have and having a look inside.
Find a different mech and get a different opinion.
Keep us posted.

You can find a whole bloody car for $500-1000, so i dont see why you should cough up $1400 for a gearbox!
