I'm pretty sure anyone with a MUT-3 tool should be able to code it to your car.
If you don't know of anybody with one, you could probably head down to your local Stealership as a last resort. I'm sure they could code it for you.

thanks mate but I'm trying to avoid the dealership lol. already have to get a whole new set of engine mounts and a lower sump off them. I'm more interested in knowing if the chips internal code can be changed. switched over to a flip key and have the original case just sitting around, just needs a chip put in it

That's exactly what I'm trying to do. Just been looking everywhere for a cheap remote to implant into it. Can't find someone selling one that isn't willing to sell it without an accompanying ECU and whatever else.
Cheapest I found was $250 which I'm definitely not going to pay.

key from a wrecked 380.

No wrecker with half a brain would separate a key from a car by itself, the key is worth a lot as part of the key + ECU + etc package, by itself the key is worth less and the ECU etc will be harder to sell.

just needs a chip put in it

And where will this chip come from?

Gone are the days of any locksmith cutting you a spare key in 5 minutes and charging you $4.50 - if you want a spare, $250 may need to be spent. And a few hours of your time.
Moral: buy a second hand car, make sure you get the spare keys, or negotiate the price down by a reasonable amount. You'd be surprised how many sellers will get serious about hunting down that second key or remote when they discover the success of the sale may hinge on it.

Shop around though, prices for a new key cut and coded vary greatly. I think Mitsfix can do them, but check the website.

Consider the consequences of your one and only key going missing . . . . .

so if a wrecker with half a brain won't sell a key separate that leaves at least 50% that will hahahaha. where will a chip come from - from inside the key lol.

moral - think outside the box and look around to see what can be done before just handing over fistfuls of cash.

hmmmm thinking...... maybe the point of this post answers that question lol

The problem is the transponder can only be programmed once... at least that is what I think is right? So buying a 2nd hand key from the wreckers would be useless.

I should of updated my key thread that I made ages ago, I managed to buy a key from the US for roughly $80, got it cut for $10 and got Mal to code it at his shop and it worked fine! For some reason the remote door unlocking wouldn't work but I can still unlock the doors manually with the key, he was able to program it so it would start the engine, which is the main thing anyway. For me I just wanted a bit of security as I only got 1 key when I bought the car so it definitely does that job. Part number is MN141545, if your searching on ebay I wouldn't trust the dirt cheap ones as I think there are a lot of listing for ones without the transponder chip.

This is the guy I got mine off although he has upped his price a bit since I got mine lol http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-UNCUT-OEM-4-BUTTON-MITSUBISHI-KEYLESS-REMOTE-KEY-HEAD-FOB-CLICKER-N-/290707778493?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43af88abbd

thanks for the info. had a feeling they may not be reprogrammable but it never hurts to ask. I'm not worried bout the remote functions just starting the car. been quoted $180 for a duplicate through a key cutter but I wanna see if there's a more cost effective option that'll do the same job

Was this just a problem with your remote, or can you not code the remote to the car?

where did you ever get the idea that they can only be reprogrammed once?

Too be honest I'm not quite sure what the problem was.. Mal had a good play around with it but it just wouldn't work.

A mitsi mechanic told me there is a trick to it with the MUT.
You need to delete previously learned keys cause the tables only allow for certain number of codes.
same as the bluetooth.

Coding a new key with the MUT makes all other keys inoperative. Hence all keys need to be present at the matching session. That's my understanding anyway.

You can still buy brand new keys for the 380 or galant for $100 from the US.

Because it is fact????

Once a key has been programmed to a car it can not be programmed to another.

Nope.

Again max is correct, a simple read of the manual would confirm this. Any keys requiring use post programming need to be present when new key is coded

Thanks Mal, that clears up a lot of points.

I guess that kills off a few ideas like "Ï will just go to the wreckers and pick up a cheap one." lol

I will repeat something I've said before - if you buy a used car, say any Mitsu made this century - make sure you get 2 keys, or be prepared to go through a time and money consuming process to get that spare key.

Personal note: Grand daughter is driving around in wife's Lancer, says she has lost the key, can she have the other key?
Reply: Nope, start looking. I don't want to go through the whole process to replace it. Painful.

thanks guys for being helpful. always gonna try n see if there's are smarter option than just handing over money before at least googling or asking the guys in the know their opinion.

To clear a few misconceptions up for all

Once a key has been programmed to a car it can not be programmed to another car. I will be honest in stating that i am not 100% sure why however as far as I can tell it has something to do with the chip in the key being locked to that car which must happen through the transponder when programming is done. I have tried with my MUTIII to programme a key from one wreck into another and simply did not work.

Secondly, you dont need to clear old keys, as soon as you go into key registration mode and then you continue and programme the first key, ALL previous keys are forgotten. If you have other keys which are not present and reprogrammed then they are only good fur unlocking doors.

Finally, with the 380, the remote function can be moved across cars ie you can have a key which unlocks doors both manually and remotely but will not start the car if that makes sense.
