I noticed the older 3rd gens had a battery cover.

Will the top part fit a KJ2 which doesn't have the cover, or do I need the whole assembly to get it to work?

Go to the wreckers and check out Magnas with and without the cover. That's what I did.

And what were your findings?

Yes, got one on my 2001 TJ that came without one.

Notice how I made you wait for the answer? lol Just teasing.

Unbroken one best obviously, also take the 2 front scrivets.
Also, check that your battery hold down has a bar across it, that's what the lid bolts to.

Thanks MadMax, I'll have a look for that bar :)

Whats the advantage of the cover?

Aside from hiding the battery? Nothing.

It's tidy.
It's a nice flat spot to put sticky labels reminding you when to do oil/filter/coolant changes.
Other than that, well . . . no functional need for it really.

I hadn't thought of that, thanks for the idea Max

Another use is for clumsy mechanics who accidentally but regularly drop screwdrivers or spanners across the battery terminals. Keep the lid down and problem solved.

I find it handy for my cup of coffee

Pretty much makes the battery lid an essential mod then. lol

Need a modified one for T/KL's, or a custom lid made up

They fit all 3rd gen Magnas.. TE-TJ fit 100% and TL-TW fit with minor cutting and they have some small overhang on the radiator support being as they are different and angled more

Later 3rd gens. had no cover due to the perceived possibility of battery overheating.

I thought it must have been cost cutting
