View Full Version : Ticking Noise...driving me nuts!

Hi All,

I know there are plenty of threads on this, but I am not sure if mine is the same issue, well the mechanic thinks that anyway.

My 380 has just started making a loud ticking noise about 6 months ago, I have had my car serviced since then, but they say it is normal for a car of its age (2006 190000km).

The ticking does not happen when cold, when the engine is at operating temperature, that is when the ticking happens. Due to this, I think it maybe a oil problem or something wrong with the tappets, hydraulic lifters? The ticking noise does rise with the revs.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Braedz,

It sounds like (no pun intended!) the EGR or purge valve/solenoid.

As you say, one or two threads about it.

Easiest way to check for sure is to disconnect the wiring plug on the top of it.

If the noise stops once you disconnect the plug, you have found the cause.

If not, back to square one.

No harm caused by disconnecting the plug, but it will throw a CEL after a little while.

Thanks mate.

Where can I find the EGR purge valve and where is the plug located? Is it at the back of the engine?

Is this the EGR purge valve?

Yep, that's it.

The plug is just about smack bang in the middle of that pic.

Dead easy to disconnect.

Bugger, the ticking noise is still there after the EGR being disconnected.

Could it be the hydraulic lifters being noisy? Might upload a video to help troubleshoot.

I suspect that if the noise is the EGR valve it won't disappear immediately after you disconnect it.

Disconnect it, go for a short drive, then check.

Ok, will give it a shot and report back. Cheers.

try the small little black vacuum valve on the top of the rocker cover on the timing belt side front bank.
it just pulls out.

:)

PCV valve, that is!
Some rattle at idle, some don't.

Pull it out with the engine running and see if the rattle goes away.

I think i've got the same problem but pretty sure it's very common and normal with plenty of cars
Both my dads 2007(170kms) aurion and my mums 2012(25kms) fiesta make pretty much the same noise
Here's a 5 second video I just took of the engine bay after the car was running for about 2 minutes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRyMXpAKKk0&feature=youtu.be

regardless of it being normal or not in about 1000kms with I have my next service I'll ask them to have a look maybe it can be fixed...

So just take it out and if the noise goes away straight away then just replace it with a new valve?
I'm not too sure where it is could someone please direct me to where it is or take a pic for me? :P
thanks in advance guys!

I had the EGR valve disconnected over the weekend, but the ticking noise is still there. :(

Might try the PCV valve trick.

Just go ahead and buy a new PCV valve anyway.

Loosen the main drive belt completely, that will eleiminate air con and alternator the car will still idle.

Hahahaha and will eliminate the motor completely if you dont remove the belt all together for this so called test.

Braedz, get Treaddyman to have a listen and see if is anything like his is doing, that will answer your question pretty quickly

Yea, will do Mal. I will report back if I have found a solution.

Rubbish,,,you drive a Magna, what do you know about a 380?

Clearly a lot more than you do, add to this you clearly dont know what I drive or what I own or what I work on day to day.....

Expanding on my comment above, reason I state this is that there have been instances where people have read information and taken that information literally. In this case if you just loosen the belt there is a risk it could come off or get caught in the PS belt and end up winding itself around the back of the crank pulley and then end up going under the timing belt cover. In this case then you may find your timing belt slips thus damage gets done. I have had a few 380's come in on tow trucks where either the alt belt has failed and collected the PS belt OR the PS belt has failed, wrapped itself around the crank pulley and taken everything out in its path including the timing belt and covers.

Also remember, although the belts may tension ever so slightly differently the simple fact is that they still do the same thing and behave the same way as they would on a Magna given the general design of the belts are the same, ie PS belt on the smaller diameter inside section of the crank pulley and the alt/ac belt on the larger outer area of the crank pulley

Braedz,

Check out this post: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78695&p=1317575&viewfull=1#post1317575

It's the workshop manual procedure for bleeding air from the lash adjusters.

A faint chance it might cure your ticking problem. Only faint coz you reckon you don't get the tick on a cold start, only once the motor warms up a bit, and this procedure says if it is air in the lash adjusters then the ticking noise is there as soon as you start the car.

Kim.
