Since buying my TR I've noticed a whirring sound from the w/bearings that I can't place.
It's really noticeable at 60k's and at this stage I've only had it to 70.
I've listened for it from all seats and with the armrest down and ski door opened, can't place it.
It doesn't load up with swerving as a tapered bearing would and it is not a rumble like a bearing with the case hardening breaking up.

I was told the car had new halfshafts about 5 yrs ago.
So I started diagnosis by loosening a front axle nut and checking the torque.
The spec is 200 - 260Nm. At about 260, the nut lined up with the horizontal hole in the axle.
Previously they had the hole almost lining up with the vertical hole.
My conclusion is that they rattled the nut up to around 400Nms or more.

Now given that the double row ball bearing is a fairly solid bearing, is it possible the overtightening has warped the inner race?

If one has been bodgied the other will be the same and for all I know maybe the rear bearings as well. I'm wondering if the reason I can't place the noise is that they're all stuffed!

RANT...
I HATE RATTLE GUNS.
Never has such a more butcherous tool been unleashed on cars.
My lasting memory of my apprenticeship was Old George the tester.

He walked around with a seat cover over his shoulder and a tension wrench in his hand.
Every car that went out had the wheels torqued to spec.
Yet over the years the damage from rattle guns amazes me.
How about a wheel nut cross threaded and rattled on. It sheared off when we tried to remove it.
Final bill?
20 wheel studs and nuts and labour to replace the lot because some slacker rattled the shit out of them.

END RANT.

Cheers.

Any power tool in the hands of the incompetent can do a lot of damage. Rattle guns are no exception.

Well, yes that's true but you expect someone who works on cars may have some finesse.
Most don't realise how tight rattle guns can torque up too.

Anyway, can you respond to my question?
Do you have any experience here?
I'm looking for another opinion from a pro, not altruisms.
I thought I might get an answer here.

I would kill for an on car wheel balancer.

-Well here's an update.
Took the car over to a local shop where a mech mate works and went for a drive for a second opinion.
We agreed the the n/s/r bearing was most likely.
So I go to Repco and they give me the wrong bearing assy.
Next I go to Supercheap, they show the same bearing on their puta.
So I go to the local Missus dealer and this dude gives me a print out of the parts page. They want $330 for the assy.
So I go to Bursons. The dude shows the same wrong bearing on the puta, I show him the printout and he phones a dude who cross references the Missus part number and it
seems the '95 TR used wagon wheel bearings on the sedan in that year.
I replaced the bearing and Surprise! Surprise!
Now I hear a L/H/F wheel bearing whine.

No wonder I couldn't place the noise, it was both of them.
So now I'm up for $90 less the Repco tradies card discount.
The thing that really pisses me off is that it costs $90 for a new bearing because some idiot overtightened it with a rattle gun.

Cheers.
