Hi,

I've got a nice clean TN (EFI, manual) Magna, which I really like and want to keep for as long as possible. The only real downside is it has no power steering and this makes things a bit tricky when parallel parking etc. (especially for my wife).

I've found a guy nearby with a donor vehicle that is willing to sell all the parts needed to upgrade to power steering, for $400. He'll remove them from the original car. Does this sound okay? Factor a bit extra value in because this is Tassie and there are fewer cars around.

I have a couple of questions:

1) Will the parts just bolt up pretty easily to mine?

2) Is the following the complete list:

steering rack
power steering pump
belt
hoses
reservoir
relevent brackets/bolts

3) Are there any seals or rebuild kits or anything that are worthwhile doing before the upgrade?

And - am I missing anything? - am I crazy for doing this?

Cheers,
Craig

$200 is about all I would pay. $400 seems too much. Up here, you could get the whole car (almost any unreg. 1st gen) for that. Of course then you would have to trailer it home and take the parts off it yourself which wouldn't be a lot of fun. I suppose it depends on your situation.

I understand why you want to do it. When I bought my first Magna (a TM), I didn't order power steering because I thought that was for cissies. It was only when I first had to park in a tight spot that I realised my mistake.

I have a couple of questions:

1) Will the parts just bolt up pretty easily to mine?

No modifications are required but "pretty easily" might be slightly optimistic. Have a read of magna_buff's information post, page 4, post #35. It is cryptic but will give you some idea what you are in for: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40090&page=4

2) Is the following the complete list:

That looks right to me.

3) Are there any seals or rebuild kits or anything that are worthwhile doing before the upgrade?

I will have to leave this for someone more knowledgeable to answer. I'm interested myself as I need to replace a power steer hose on my TP sedan. I'm intending to swap one from my TP wagon which is unroadworthy. I think I'll have to take the EFI inlet manifold off to get the hose out. It is harder to get at on efi than on carby.

And - am I missing anything? - am I crazy for doing this?

You're driving a 1st Gen Magna and liking it. Of course you're crazy. :woot:
