Hey guys I installed a reverse camera but i've run into a little problem...
My aftermarket player (sony xav-63) won't automatically turn to the reverse camera video when I chuck the transmission into reverse... I know the camera works because I can view it when I go to the settings
It seems that the reverse isn't "connected" to the head unit...
Here's a pic of the back of my head unit:

From what I can tell I need to connect the purple/white wire to the reverse switch but I have no idea what it is on the 380...

* the handbreak function does work; won't let me view videos unless the handbreak is up...

any ideas?

thanks!

Hey mate,
To automatically switch the reverse camera when reversing you need to do trigger a 12v signal to the camera when you put it in gear. Easiest way to do is to run a figure 8 or equivalent 2 core cable to your taillight, get your multimeter out and find out which wires are your 12v and ground. You then need to splice into them, parallel them and connect your 12v to the purple/white cable off the headunit and 12v feed on the camera, and connect the ground to the cameras grounding.

thanks for the reply!
would those 2 wires be the ones already connected to the camera's electricity?

and the purple/white wire is only 1 wire.. so it only connects to the reverse light's plus wire?

Nah, separate circuit. It's hard for me to illustrate a picture via text, but this link should help you.

I misread your post but pretty much connect the purple white wire to the positive of your reverse light and that voltage becomes the switching mechanism for your camera.

Good luck!

parellel, figure 8's, 2 core cable wtf

connect that purple wire hanging off the back of the headunit and run it all the way to the back of the tailight & tap into the reverse light wire. Done.

have that same headunit, works really well for the coin spent

Haha, figure 8, as in two single core cables joined together down the middle and looks like figure 8 (or infinity symbol) when looking from the ends.

Anyhow, TuviReb, if down the track you want to install reversing sensors as well, then it is best to run a two-core cable from the back to the front (for simplicity, consider one of the core to be red and the other black). Connect the red core to the +ve of the reversing light and the black core to feed the reversing sensor. At the front, you can install a switch and connect the red core to a pin on the switch (this is also the pin the reverse trigger of your unit connects to). Connect the black core to the other pin of the switch. This way, it can be bypassed if needed (like when reversing with a trailer or having a bike rack).

You may also consider installing a small delay on relay in the boot to delay switching the reversing sensor and triggering the screen when switching from P to D. Use the reverse light to trigger the timer relay and pass the above mentioned red core through the triggered pins of the relay. A 500ms delay is enough.

Note that the above is the setup I have.

sorry for hijacking the thread but I have just bough a Reverse camera that slots in the number plate light area....can anyone tell me if it will work with the colour display of the SX model without buying a monitor?

Hmm. Not sure. Most likely it won't have additional inputs. If that is the case, it is best to get one of those mirrors with a small LCD screen on one end to use as the reversing display. Some cars that do not have multimedia displays do it this way.
