View Full Version : Factory antenna removal
Hey guys, I posted this in a thread in the 3rd Gen section but got no response, so I'll try it here. Does anyone know how to get the manually operated factory radio antenna out of a TH? I've got all the bolts and stuff undone, but it's being held in by the part that's outside the car. I don't know how to seperate the inside part from the outside part.

I assume you have removed the ring nut from the outside of the car.
How do I do that, exactly?

The ring nut has four grooves cut in it. You would have to make your own tool. Something like two small flat screwdrivers and something to turn it etc.,(ajustable pliers with some cloth to softin the bit of the pliers) without damaging the nut or the paint.

What ever you do, do not use pliers!!!!! I did, they slipped and I ended up with a 2" scratch back to the metal, had to get the panel resprayed. Use a pair of vice grips or lock jaws to clamp on to the lug, then rotate - this works a trerat and doesn't damage the paint. Then inside the car pull back teh carpety interiror (theres a few carpet clips you'll need to extract carefully, and pull the mast down. One screw holds the earthing wire. There's a whole metal bracket that you can undo (two screws) to make removal a bit less fiddly.
Got it installed, no worries. Thanks guys. It works awesomely. I did a dodgy wiring job, I just put the power and head unit wires into the respective terminals in my amp, hehehe. So the antenna is up the whole time the head unit is on. Which doesn't really matter too much.

Dude - got power antenna? How much? Mitsu part or other? My std antenna just snapped - or some dork snapped it at the carpark and I need a new one.
$129 from Autobarn. They ordered it in for me. Aerpro is the brand, AP179 is the part number. It's not a Mitsu part, but it's build for 3rd gens and fits in perfectly. If you don't want to spring for a power one, you can have my old manual one :P

Not bad price - I reckon. The wiring - since I haven't even bothered to check yet... is there any already, or do I have to pull from the Amp (head unit)? Etc?
It's a 96 TE.
Thanks for the offer for the manual antenna - I'll keep that in mind.... I have the old Magna radio if u wanna swap..... :)
i got a wire on my head deck just for a power ariel so mine goes up only wen the radio is on, and goes down if the dvd or cd is playing

when you get an after market power arial to replace the factory manual unit - you will have to run a constant power wire and a remote wire - the earth you can bolt to anything near the Arial - the other 2 will need to be run from the h/u - not hard to do though.
Also - some H/U have the ability to have the arial up for radio and down for CD / Tape / Mini disk etc - you will have to check your H/U wire outs to see if yours does.

I just plugged the antenna wires into my amp - ie. power and remote. It works fine, except the antenna is up even when a CD is playing. I'll do a proper wiring job when I can be bothered. But if you're lazy and have an amp in the boot, it's perfect.

Howdy - thought so. I only wished there was some wiring ready. Hate pulling out the HU..... Perhaps I just get one with coil at the bottom so it bends when hit.
Thanks M.

Just a quick question.. does that aerpro power antenna go all the way down? or still stick up 10-20cm from the car..

It goes all the way down. Same as the veradas auto antennas.
There is a power source you can use. Not recommended but it is there. The constant power can be supplied by the red/black wire going TO the boot light.
Then you only have to run 1 wire back to the head unit.
