I tried to use the jack today, probably it's only the 3rd or 4th time it's been used. Anyway, it went all pear shaped, if you see what I mean. It didn't go up straight, so that the threaded rod that you're winding wasn't parallel to the ground but rather started pointing down. I kept winding and it bent the rod so the jack is stuffed.

Any suggestions anyone re a decent replacement?

by the rod "pointing down" bit, do you mean that you were using it on a slope or that the rod was already bent to begin with and became more damaged as you went to use it?

Yep, the standard one is crappy, use it wrong or use it often and it goes pear shaped.
Check out 4X4 wreckers and get a heavy duty 4 wheel drive one, or check car shops for a more robust replacement.
I don't use the standard jack except in emergencies (ie away from home), I have a hydraulic jack that is quicker and safer to use, but it stays at home - too big and heavy to have floating around in the boot.

hmm...ive used my jack on the tf 4+times and has been okay.

if you go to the wreckers and spot a GQ patrol there they have a small bottle jack as standard, but whether it fits under a magna is a different story

no, I was using it on the flat and the rod wasn't bent. I used it to jack up the left side and it was fine. I then tried to jack up the RH side an got half way up and realised the jack had crapped itself. I'd like to find a replacement that fits in the same place (wagon on gas, jack goes behind spare) but is more robust.

Repco, SCA, Autobarn etc have some cheap hydraulic jacks. I've had no issues with mine with casual use. 2500km one is great for lifting the entire front or rear ends. Obviously no good to carry with you though.

Did you have the handbrake on and/or the wheels chocked? I broke the one with my TS when the car started to slip to one side.
Go to a wreckers and pick out a new one, they have heaps as they get one from just about every car that comes in, supercheap and repco are useless for getting one to carry with you, they only sell huge ones for the big jobs.
