I could crawl under the car and check... naaah, too cold. It was around 14-16 mm socket. Surprisingly small anyway.

John, it's HUGE! you need a 24mm socket or box end spanner. you can risk using a large enough shifter to loosen it, but I would use the socket if i were you.

thanks for that. largest ive got is 23mm and that just wouldnt fit on. i remember my dads kr used to fit it from memory. How many litres of oil should i be expecing out of the engine?

Yeah, the socket is big, bigger than what I had, that's why I had to go and get an individual socket to do the job. It's stupid really, but oh well...

oil:
~4.3L +- 300ml for oil filter (depending on the size of your filter)

Just double check once you have around 4L in there.

Yup Definately get a socket, your sump plug is not something you want to round off.
The $5 Supercheap oil drain pan is great with a little knob for your filter to drain on and a pourer, the neck of which fits nicely into the opening of an empty oil bottle to make sure you get every last drop out. this is good for the environment because waste oil isnt floating about the place

hmm, I'm gonna serivce my TF in the next few days. I remember the last time I did it, the oil pretty much filled right up to the top of the pan...so maybe nearly 5L of oil

Yes, the pan is the best, except I don't get what the knobby thing at the square end if for...the neck/spout thing is useful for pouring into bottles :)

when you refill it, just make sure you don't over fill, stop at 4.5L MAX. 5L is too much, you'll overfill and can cause damage to sparkplug housing and/or foul the sparkplug insulation. Just have your oil level in the middle of the suggested marks on the dip stick. This was taught by a Race mechanic

Use a ring spanner over a socket any day - they dont come flying off as easily - depends how much you like busted knuckles anyway. And make sure the spanner has a long shaft coz that plug is *tight*.

Yeah, definatly use a ring spanner, so much easier! Sockets are a paid sometimes and a ring spanner is just easier in this application. I think from memory it was 24mm, its a big bastard coz i didn't have a spanner big enough. Never use an adjustable spanner on anything, allways sockets or ring spanners! You don't want to round these bastards off!

The knobby thing at the square end is for your oil filter, place your oil filter's hole onto the knob (that sounds terrible) and it will sit upside down quietly draining away :)
