same deal as mounting 6" in the front doors of 1st and 2nd gens with only 4" holes in the dash i guess. I've got splits in the back of mine but ive just put both the woofer and tweater on the rear shelf.
I don't see a problem cutting holes in your door trims if you really wanted to. Except, I wouldn't know about using 6" splits...maybe 4. I reckon it can be done, with a mdf spacer ring or something so the speaker can be secured properly. You could also make up some kick panels too...
There is very little to be gained by mounting splits in your rear doors because you're ears face forwards and therefore cannot hear the minute detail in staging a separate tweeter offers. :)

so at the moment i've got 6x9's in the back and 6x6 in the front, and sub in boot. if i want sound quality (im getting splits for the front) what should i do with the back? splits?

why bother with speakers in the back at all ?
you are in the front, driving, you cant hear them ? :p
ive got friends with competiton audio cars, and they dont have any speakers in the rear at all.
i removed mine, when the subs start peaking, the speakers just start rattling from all the bass the subs push out.

6x9s are going to get drowned out by the sub anyway, and will probably start clipping and doing other funny things cuz of the extra bass drowning them out.
i personally believe speakers in the rear are not necessary, but yeh, i guess i just said that.
i had 7x10's in the parcel shelf and found that i had so much bass it would move the cones on the 7x10s outta phase n just sould like crap so i took mine out n sounds all good
i see no reason for rear speakers i can hear the music good enough in the front,
y bother catering for ppl to hear music in the back ?? they should be grateful they are even aloud in the car
oh forgot to say so much bass from the sub

so.... just remove rear speakers and leave empty holes with stock covers on? how does that affect sound quality from sub?

back on topic, yes splits are possible in the back door.
My work mate has a set in both backdoors of his lancer, thier mounted flush with the door panel and his system sounds Awsome.
But, as stated b4, the gains from rear fill arnt always worth it, so i wouldnt go spending a lot of money on it (unless your rich)(and if u are, do u wish to make a donation? :D )
So yer, my 2cents
so.... just remove rear speakers and leave empty holes with stock covers on? how does that affect sound quality from sub?
yeh just left the covers on, lets more bass into the car

spilts in the front, a nice set of 6" coaxials in the rear shelf and a sub or two in the boot.
should do the trick nicely. no need for splits in the rear, same with 6x9s pointless really if you have a sub.

co-ax is well, the tweeter and the woofer mounted on the same diaphram (basket)
splits - tweeter and woofer are seperate controlled by a x-over
in other words, to save time and money, just dont install any rear speakers unless you want to do a surround system to show off at maccas :)

When listening to a good home hi-fi the speakers are in front of you, when going to a live concert the stage and speakers are also in front of you, So to start with with good car sound you need to have good speakers mounted correctly to give a good front stage image. Back speakers are a personal thing and if you really hear a to notch home hi-fi system you will get thefeeling the sound is all around you, for that very reason I prefer rear speakers to act a fill. This meand you really can't pick there there but if you turn them off you can notcie something is missing. I would only stick them on the rear shelf and I prefer just some simple 6inch speakers. They don't need to pump bass and the treble response is all in the front. They dont even have to run off a amp.
Buy the best most expensive front speakers you can afford and the best amp you can to run them and you will be surprised how much imaging good speakers can have. Personally I have never found a front set of splits under 800 that gives my the audiophile quality I like.

Oh 1 thing I forgot to mention, you need good rear speakers and I would use splits for this if DVD surround sound is something your after. Not much good have a 5.1 DVD player in the car if there are no rear speakers....
